How quiet is the 2018 TLX on the highway?
#41
The TLX was designed to deliver vault-like quietness in all driving conditions, with major improvements achieved through enhancements in body stiffness, body and door sealing, and widespread sound insulation.Acoustic Spray Foam
Applied to the unit body in 10 crucial locations around the door openings, acoustic spray foam helps create a solid foundation for a quieter cabin. The application process is automated and computer controlled, with the foam curing in 7 to 11 seconds after application for a highly precise and effective process.Additional Materials and Sealing
Additional sound-absorptive materials are used throughout the unit body and interior, each dedicated to blocking a particular noise type and frequency. The materials include Thinsulate insulation, body sealers, noise-absorbing carpeting, and a high-density and dual density melt sheets. Liquid Applied Sound Deadening (LASD) is used in the trunk. Key areas of attention include the TLX's dashboard lower and floor area. Total body leakage is reduced 50 percent vs. the outgoing TL. The end result is reduced road noise and drumming on both concrete and asphalt surfaces, along with lower engine noise, for a more relaxing and pleasant driving experience.Wind Noise
Significant improvements in both high-frequency and mid-frequency noise heard in the cabin were achieved by lowering the windshield-wiper height and optimizing the shape of the side mirrors. Special sealing methods in the B-pillars and C-pillars, and between the door gaps, further reduce audible wind noise.Improved Door Sealing
The new TLX adopts the previous TL's 360-degree double seals that completely surround each passenger door. In addition, the TLX uses a third set of gap seals, positioned at the front, center, rear and bottom edges of each door, that help eliminate potential noise source caused by turbulent airflow in the cavities around the door hinges and latches. The doors' internal steel stampings receive further sound insulation in the form of large acoustic hole seals, internal foam sound barriers, and specially targeted B-pillar plugs.

Road &Track says:
7. Hush hush
The cabin of the TLX is amazingly quiet. Wind noise doesn't become noticeable until over 100 mph, and road noise is hushed.
The TLX uses active noise cancellation as well as conventional tricks, including expanding-foam insulation in the body.

Agree. The TLX does a good job with noise. Its a 2db quieter then mine @ 70 by C&D measure. Quite often I get a chance to cruise at 90MPH with WAZE on some interstates in rural areas & the wind noise is quite noticeable. As luck would have it the radio will play loud.

Whats a good site to search car decibel levels? I read the 2018 q50 has significant improvement in cabin noise levels. Curious to know what it is since there was a review out there stating that the 2018 q50 is quiter than the aspec. Strange.

What's your source Mondster? Opposite of what I'm reading.
I didn't see a test rating in db, but, generally see things like this written about Infiniti Q50 when it comes to Road Noise:
"The Q50 also isn't as polished when it comes to noise isolation, ride comfort, interior appointments and infotainment systems. " (Consumer Reports)

Spot on! While I may love the slight sound of a good exhaust/engine, hearing vibration or excessive road noise will bother me. Especially if sound system is so-so. The TLX is indeed very quiet, a little too much but what can you do.

Thank you. This is why I do use raw decibals as a measure of overall quietness but I do not use those numbers to state one car is better than another.
This is EXACTLY what I like. I hate raucous drone-y engines but I also love when the engine has a satisfying growl at higher rpms (a.k.a when I am hooning around).

11*F the night before last low 60*F & full sun today. Time for some open side pipes & golden oldies making rolling thunder down the moonshiner two lane blacktop roads. Most fun you can have with your clothes on.

Are you still butt hurt or something? Why can’t you get over it already? He asked the question and I literally answered it directly with what is being stated in this thread. Not sure what else you would like from me. Furthermore I am entitled to my opinion and you are not going to sit here and tell me what to write or tell me what to think so again I reiterate that you can take my advice from before and go bug someone else.

You’re butt hurt because you sell Acuras and you want everyone on the forum to pretend Acuras are the best cars on the planet. That is why. Furthermore are you dense, a troll, or is your reading comprehension simply abysmal? Nowehere did I state the TLX was not quiet but you seem hell bent on trying to make me say it is quiet. You think my opinion is false and that’s fine, but again I am not going to state something because you keep buzzing around trying to make me say something. So what exactly is it that you want?

I want nothing from you. Obviously, you have an agenda and no matter what factual proof anyone has you are hell bent in trying to discredit the TLX's quietness on the highway. I will agree to disagree with you on this matter. It doesnt help anyone to carry on this discussion.
Yes I am the one with an agenda here. I still never said the TLX was loud so not sure what we are agreeing or disagreeing on. Oh actually I agree that this discussion is pointless. Have a good day.

Nexx & RDX knock off the bickering or take it to PM
Svtmike, not sure what your agenda here in this forum is, but participating in discussions is one thing, blatantly trolling is another, so this is your first warning to tone it down.

The point is: in order to get something noticeably quieter you have to step up to something like an over $100,000 Mercedes S class. And, at least in this regard, the TLX is not "just a re-badged Accord". It's actually significantly superior.

I thought the emojis made it clear that I was just making a light/hearted joke. I have no agenda except to read and sometimes participate in discussions on topics that interest me.

Taking every opportunity to make those kinds of comments stopped being light hearted, and/or funny some time ago to the owner members of this forum, so it, and the constant negativity needs to end.

C&D:
Vehicle noise that makes its way into the passenger compartment can greatly affect a car's character. To measure it, we use a hand-held Brüel & Kjær Type 2236 sound-level meter. First, we use the VBOX to determine the speedometer reading that corresponds to a true 70 mph. Then we position the microphone close to the driver's right ear and measure the sound at idle, at full throttle, and when cruising at 70 mph. Sound level is measured in decibels with the A-weighting scale (dBA), and we average the sound level in two directions to minimize the effect of wind. And as you'd expect, the higher the number, the louder the noise

Or a 50k A4 Prestige, quieter than the S-Class at 63dB also per Car and Driver. But no doubt the TLX is quieter than the Accord. That is one of the reasons to step up to Acura from Honda.

Not to pile on but a FORD 150 King Ranch 4X4 pickup truck also is slightly quieter then a TLX @ 70 on the highway. 66/67DB is good advertising against the ACCORD but not against the whole universe of cars out there. Don't know what my current Expedition EL 4X4 tests at other then it is a quite ride but the 2018 version also tests better 66db then the TLX 67db at 70mph.
The FORDS do cost more then the TLX but still, they are 4X4 body on chassis off road equipped trucks with high horsepower (375-400) engines.

My 2.4 TLX is a very quiet car, city and highway, and my undercoating ensures that even more road noise is blocked out. I sometimes worry that with tunes going on the ELS and so little cabin noise, whether it crosses a safety point picking up emergency vehicle sirens. However, being a vigilant driver, I hopefully mitigate the threat.

Bought my 2015 TLX SH-AWD Advance brand new on 10/26/2015 with only 2 miles on her. I test drove the TLX, G37, and 335xi. While the 335 had the most balls in terms of performance, the TLX hands down was the smoothest and quietest. The G37 was the loudest because of the engine harshness. If you're worried about road/highway noise, TLX is one of the cheapest cars to get for its low dB levels. It also does a good job at keeping wind noise down up to about 80mph. If you want an Audi/Lexus/BMW/MB with similar noise levels you will pay a premium for it.

Got 2018 TLX SH-AWD 3 weeks ago, 340 miles, after couple of days a rattling sound, similar to chattering of teeth when shivering coming from middle of steering wheel, it stops by placing a hand on the horn or in the crevice surrounding the horn between it and the rest of the steering wheel, worst when driving at highway speeds or on roads which are not the smoothest, I can feel significant vibrations in the crack surrounding the horn and feels like the horn is loose and banging against the surrounding steering wheel causing the rattling. Drive is very quiet and smooth, comfortable when the rattling isn't there.
Anyone else have similar issue?
Taking it to the dealership this week.

I just took my 4 month old TLX 3.5 Elite SH-AWD A Spec for a long trip this past weekend. My goodness, it was a perfect highway cruiser! So quiet, smooth, poised, and yet with very good passing power. After 3 hours of continuous driving, I was not tired at all. It was such a joy!

They most likely made enhancements for 2018 that helped that score. Would be interesting to compare both from the same model year.

Seeing that you can go to a local dealer and test drive one it's pretty easy to find out. IMO it's a fairly quite car depending on the pavement. Road noise has never been a concern for me so far. Once the tires are rotated that may change. For what it costs I doubt there is a car that puts out much less road noise. Tires and road surface will be the main factor on just how much noise you get.
I can complain about a few things but never has this issue irritated me until I read this thread.

Yes, the TLX is quiet and smooth, but the ES goes to 11. Except for the high pitched motor whine you get from the ES hybrid. (Which most people don't notice.)
