Dealer trades to get the car you want.
I placed a deposit for a TLX Tech last week. The car color exterior/interior wasn't in stock. I also asked for a car built after late October to get a cross traffic that was audible. The salesperson said they would contact other Acura dealers in BC (there are 5 others). He said someone at his dealership would have to physically catch a ferry (I live on an Island) and bring back the car if one can be found.
Would someone who might be in the industry explain the process of dealers trading or purchasing cars from other dealers.
I noticed one of the other dealers new car inventory has two that match the color/model. No idea when they were built. Is it possible that a dealer won't trade and my choice will have to be ordered from the factory.

A dealer swap will normally be done if the dealership (yours) that is looking for a particular car has the exact car, or one very similar to give back to the dealer that has said vehicle...Sometimes you'll catch a break and that dealer that has your car will want something that your dealer has available, i.e you want a TLX but the dealer that has your TLX wants an MDX from your dealer...
With the TLX being so new and the limited production of certain models, most dealers are trading car for car, maybe with just a different color or a non-tech for a tech, something along those lines...It depends on what kind of relationship your dealership has with those other dealers and if they're able to put something together...It's quite easy to do, but only if both sides can agree on a swap...Ask your dealer to call the other dealerships and see what can be worked out!

Dealers can also see what is in shipment unsold and do a pre-arrival trade. This is no extra cost to the dealer. They just need to find your spec TLX on rail....we do it all the time but of course there's a greater volume of Hondas than Acuras to search.

A dealer trade is how I got my car.

That's what happened for my TLX. It was a dealer trade but it came straight off the truck from Marysville with 5 miles on it!

I had to wait several weeks for my dealer to get my TLX. I saw another dealer had the car I wanted listed on their website. I asked my dealer if they would do a trade with them. They said the other dealer wouldn't do swaps with them so it wasn't possible. I guess they're too competitive to help one another.

When I got mine traded from another dealer, that dealer owed my dealer from a previous swap. I guess some have better relationships than others.
My original ordered TLX was stuck in Kentucky the day before they told me it was in Georgia. I live south in Florida. The delay was painful. I complained and they found one still on the truck from Marysville on the opposite coast of Florida. It arrived four hours later. I was thankful that the salesman was resourceful.
