2015 vs 2016 TLX
2015 vs 2016 TLX
I used to have an '04 TL and am looking to get a car as close to that feel that I can. I test drove the '16 below and the transmission felt fine to me and the infotainment system did not feel slow, good enough for me at least.
I'm looking at used TLXs in the area and am torn between two vehicles. One is a 2015 TLX SH-AWD w/ Advance and the other is a 2016 SH-AWD w/Tech
I've heard that there were more problems with the 2015 than the 2016, but don't know enough about it to know if it's just a portion of the 15 models or all of them, and if the VIN for this specific vehicle would fall into one or the other.
So, all other things even (mileage, maintenance, etc.) would you prefer a 2015 Advance, or a 2016 Tech?
Here are the cars:

I had only one issue with my 2015 SH-AWD for the 18 months I had it, which was the sorta jerky shifts from 1-2 and 2-3. The down shifts were a little slow when tromping the gas for passing, but this was never a big deal for me, but certainly is for others. Depending upon the VIN and the transmission updates applied to the 15, you may be fine. However, extensive test driving is a must. By the way, I decided to return to my 4 cylinder roots and get the quick and smooth shifting 4 cylinder with the 8 DCT transmission.
I’m the proverbial hater opposite the fanboy mapleloaf. I hated my TLX more than any other car I’ve driven and wrote a whole thread to help people like you, as a shopper, because I was just like you before buying my TLX - hell bent on this exact car. I survived mine 14 months. There is a reason that one you’re considering (appearing mint with low mileage) was traded in. There is still time for you choose wiser than a TLX V6. Lexus or Audi, to name 2 better options. If you do pull the trigger, I pulled my VCMuzzler off my TLX before trading in and can sell it to you for half price when you figure out you need one.
A 2015 TLX V6 SH-AWD Advance may be the worst decision you ever make. Maybe not. Maybe I’m just an engineer and car guy keen on details like not vibrating and shifting properly. Here is my review and what to watch for.

In fact, if you want to come to Milwaukee to test drive mine in all its vibrating and awful shifting glory, it’s for sale: same mileage, same price, probably the same problems too.

I went with my heart and bought the 2016 TLX. We'll see if I regret it or not... The car is still under warranty for a short period of time, so that was a deciding factor. Kind of hedge by bets against any issues found in your thread. And if I hate it, i'll trade it in in a year or two.
Congrats Theo! Drive it like you stole it and enjoy your new ride. At least you asked, read and are informed - that was wiser than I was while shopping. Your car may treat you just fine as have many other TLXs on the road. I wonder if the problems with mine came from rolling off the assembly line on a Friday afternoon or something (I know that's a bad old joke). All I can say is ignore people like me, give it a fair shot on your own, and ultimately decide if you love it, hate it, or find it's somewhere in between.
FWIW: I would have gone with the 16 as well. The 15 you found had a high VIN for 15s that was outside the range that it could/would be replaced, so it will be stuck with any performance or shifting problems permanently. I feel like your 16 ZF9 will be better than that 15. I also saw the 15 had two owners - 4 years old, 2 owners and 42k miles is not a good sign. Advance vs Tech really only amounts to a few unimportant differences.
-Foglights (these are only good for appearance)
-ACC (which is totally useless in real world driving)
-Remote start (which is nice, but not necessary)
-Vented seats (which is really nice in summer)

I went into the dealer this morning and they did a software update that changed the shifting pattern in the car. It made a huge difference on the jerky feel from gears 2-3 in the car. If it stays like this for the next few years i'll be pretty happy.
