Press release...

More than 25 years ago VW introduced the first pocket rocket and started a niche market that is now a style statement for many car enthusiasts. We wanted to build a car that let the best of the GTI and the best of the aftermarket kick asphalt! The H&R Project GTI has something for all. It is subtle, but different. The tone on tone paint difference is not always noticeable, but the power and handling definitely is! The new GTI has an automatic built-in market. The young car guys who built GTIs 25 years ago cant wait to get their hands on this new car. The Y Generation likes a well-engineered vehicle that offers a huge array of aftermarket to add to their style. H&R GTI has it all!

Some highlights:

Horsepower output is in the 240-250 range and with the DSG Transmission the acceleration of the GTI is insane, second gear is space shuttle launch mode!

H&R Suspension increases the fun factor by 10x and keeps the OZ wheels well planted. The tires and wheel fit in fender well with no room to spare. The H&R suspension lowers the GTI 2.0 front and 1.8 rear. Handling is tight and confident ride comfort is superb. The awesome Brembo brakes stop the action in large style when the ride is over or when you bite off more road than your pants can handle.

The exterior has been brought inside with the silver two-tone theme on the dash, seats and door panels. The light and dark silver colors are separated with silver machined look piping that matches the machine turned accents on the dash and door panels. The interior experience is visually pleasing, but the audio system steals the show. The project theme dictated that aftermarket components blend in well. The AVH-P6800DVD head unit looks very much at home in the GTI and controls the awesome sound of this German Concert Hall. The front AMP fits nicely under the driver seat. The rear AMP in centrally located in the custom Cryogenic Camber/Housing. You will notice the H&R FAST (as seen at VW.com) is kept under constant restraint. WARNING: Do not open or allow the H&R FAST to exit the Cryogenic Camber. The combination of the VW power + H&R Handling + Pioneer Audio = fast driving everywhere which can be and is very contagious.

The outside is tasteful, but I think the interior is a little over the top.

I agree. I think there's one too many leather colors.

Otherwise it's the nicest looking GTI tuner I've seen in a long, long time.

So true. They should have kept the interior all black and instead of silver piping.... red stitching to go with the red on the grille.

DSG is facking amazing. That's all there is to it. Sure I miss my 5MTs, but Direkt Schalt is a thing of beauty. Fastest shift in the world.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Direct-Shift_Gearbox

"The DSG takes about 8 milliseconds to upshift[1][2]. Compare that to the SMT in the Enzo Ferrari, which takes 150 ms to upshift[1][2]. The quoted time for upshifts is the time the wheels are completely non-powered."

I know the DSG shifts quicker than any manual could shift. However, performance aside, there's just something about driving a car, downshifting, upshifting, that makes driving a car fun. Any car that does that for you, IMO, just isn't fun to drive. Going through the motions of shifting is the fun part of driving for me. Hence why driving in traffic for the last 8 years with a car that has a manual tranny doesn't bother me the least bit.

The day when manuals are no longer offered on vehicles is going to be a sad day. It's already happened on the Maxima.

Sure, I currently drive a manual as well.....and love it.
...but you do realize that that the shifting of the gears on a DSG tranny is done by the driver via paddle shifters.....the driver has full control of up and down shifts.

What's your point??? DSG only lets you DECIDE when to change gears. That's the same as a stupid Auto with sport tronic or whatever. The mechanicals and how it actually works are different,..............driver interaction is basically the same (pull/push auto stick vs pull on paddle). That is rubbish.

What is the fun in that? There is no rowing through the gears yourself. There is not intricate "dancing" with the gas, brake, and clutch. I absolutely fucking hate when ppl are like,......oh, buy you can change gears when you want blah blah,...as if its the same fucking this as driving a "Proper Manual" in the works of JC.

P.S. I am sure that Sly is fully aware of what DSG is and how it works.

I was aware of that dorkus. I've test drivin' the A3 with DSG. Although it's fast and smooth, it's just not fun. Clickin a paddle doesn't return the same sense of excitement and fun as having to push the clutch, blip the throttle, change gears and engage gears again all within a fraction of a second faster than what technology now does for the lamers.

Paddle shifting != Stick Shift

Any monkey can flip the paddles. takes practice and skill to drive a stick shift.

Just because the DSG has pseudo manual driving it's no where near the same thing.

So does anyone that owns a car with paddle shifters claim they know how to drive a manual?

OK guys; the thread has been hi-jacked already so I will make my point:

DSG (Direct Shift Gearbox), is an AUTOMATED Manual Transmission. It is NOT an Automatic. It does NOT have a Torque Converter, but rather 2 wet clutches. There are 2 input shafts, and 2 corresponding clutches;: 1-3-5 (which also serves for R), 2-4-6. All the gears spin at the same time, in unison. When clutch 1 is disengaged, clutch 2 is ready with the next gears. The entire shift takes 8 ms, making it the fastest tranny in the world (tied for 1st with the Bugatti Veyron, which uses similar technology).

I will say this all day and I will never back down; a conventional MT is 100x more fun. But let's have it right; I will chose whatever goes faster. You see these tricked-out direct shift boxes in F1 for a reason. Not because they are more fun, but because they are BETTER. Period. They get the job done in a quicker and MUCH more efficient manner.

Do I miss my previous cars which had only 1, driver-operated clutch. Yes, of course I do. But do I enjoy the AMAZINGLY fast, always perfect shift DSG offers me. You bet.

Oh, and Launch Control FTMFW.

Lewis Hamilton, Jensen Button, Michael Schumacher,

and gocubsgo55 can be added onto that last. Before this I owned to CRXs, 1 was a swapped Si.

We all know auto's are not the same as DSG's/paddle shifters, and everyone in the current discussion knows how they work. I dunno why you felt the need to "explain" how they work. Further, I dont think anyone was trying to posit that an auto tranny is the same thing as a paddle shift/DSG one. I made a comparison between the two in that the operation of changing gears,.........ie basically pulling on a lever/paddle in a DSG or an auto is the same driver experience,....BORING. Its not as involving or fun. That has nothing to do with the mechanicals/electronics of how a Auto is drastically different from a DSG type/paddle shift transmission.

I can only speak for myself, but I could care less if a DSG will shift faster than I can with a manual. Im not racing ppl on the street where I could benefit from faster shifts. If I was racing, then ya I would want paddle shifters,.....like if I drove in F1. If you want faster shifts in your commuter car then go ahead and buy a DSG box. Its just personal preference etc. I want to have more fun when I drive, so I will always drive a proper traditional manual. If some ppl like DSG etc more than a real manual, thats cool. It just takes no skill to use.

I dont think that is what he meant. You, like the rest of your list, learned how to drive manuals before driving paddle shifters. I think Sly's point was,........anyone can drive a car with paddle shifters,.....but not everyone can drive a manual. You cant go from paddle shifters and "know" how to drive a manual. You would have to learn how.

Shumi started racing Formual Ford cars (not paddle shifters) long before (1988 I think he was in FF) he was driving something with paddles.

Anyway, nice video.

There is a huge difference between a manual and DSG.
...and I do love the manual.....but only a moron thinks a DSG is the same as an auto-tranny. There is a HUGE difference between a DSG and an Auto with a "manual shift" option.

Just drove in my friends 07 GTI tonight. It has 6speed trans and its a pretty quick car, no match for my CL-S, even the owner admitted. The braking was the highlight of this car to me, very nice. Interior was also really nice, LED bulbs all throughout the car. Could not hear or feel the turbo engage, I guess thats ok.

Overall I was impressed with it, but not worth $25K+
