Who runs what for snow tires on SH-AWD... 18s or 17s ???

We just bought a pre-owned 2012 TL SH-AWD adding to our 2010 TSX Tech and to replace our 05 TSX that our son took to Florida for college. I've always been one to buy an extra set of wheels for snow tires and not do the mount/dis-mount/mount BS routine required with having just one set of wheels. I also like to stick to OEM wheels just because.

SO.... what I'm wondering is what are others using on their AWD TLs for winter wheels. How many have gone down to the "base" 17" wheels and did the -1 sizing for winter tires ?? Or have most people stuck with the 18s ?

During the winter, my AWD TL is running on 245/40/19 Michelin Pilot Alpin PA4 snow tires on 19" OEM wheels.

Michelin X-Ice 3s - they are pretty damn impressive. I had them on 17" steelies this year, but may sell these and buy a set of 19s and throw them on my stocks.

Just bought a set of 09-11 TL Base 17" 5 spokes with TPMS for $400..... so now to decide on which snow to install. Have had General Ultimax Arctic on our 2005 TSX and Blizzak WS-70s (I believe) on our 2010 TSX... both have been great snows for us in Northeastern NY. But looking at the Michelin X-Ice now and see a couple different ones... regular X-ice, X12, and Xi3 ? Anyone know the differences ?

i went down to 17" (ridgline steelies) and down a step in width too to cut thru snow.
i'm currently on Goodyear nordics (only available in Canada at Canadian Tire) for snows.

my next winter tire will probably be the goodyear ultragrip ice wrt's, which i have on my ody currently.

For my wife's new 2014 TL SH-AWD

Just received a set of Nokian HAKKAPELIITTA 8's -- 245/40R19 HKPL 8 XL STUDDED 98T

As with any studded/snow tire, road noise is a factor which is of concern.

^^^^^

The combination of studded snow tires and AWD will make your car invincible on snow and ice, as long as the ground clearance will allow.

Studded winter tires are awesome on ice, but for most urban driving, the noise they generate and slightly more bumpier ride doesn't justify using them all winter from my experience.

I'm not positive, but don't believe you can legally use studded tires everywhere. Might be worth a quick check of your local regulations or local law enforcement.

Just a follow-up on this thread. This is the 2nd year running these tires on wife's TL. Amazing tires! Quieter at highway speeds that OEM summer tires believe it or not.

Totally agree!!
I ran my 2013 SH-AWD 6MT on 225/55/17 Sottozero 3's last year. If you live in the Northeast, you remember the snow we had. My car was unstoppable.
Actually selling this set if anyone is interested -> Hit me up

Only 3 months of use and in near new condition.
