Upgrade to 20’s??

Currently own a 2012 TL with 19’s. Looking to upgrade to 20’s for the summer. Gonna be stock suspension cause a daily driver. Any recommendations on 20’s? Offset? Width? Tire size? Thx much appreciated.

hello; the main thing is to get the rolling diamter the same as stock tires. THat's the only thing you have to keep in mind. you can use a tire calculator to do this.
EVERYTHING else is preference.
You choose how wide you want to go via width and offset.

you can mimmick stock specs; or you can go a bit wider. YOUR preference.
you can use an offset calculator to help you visualize offset.

Keep in mind by changing up to a 20" wheel you will encounter the following "downgrades" for your car:
  • Ride will become more harsh
  • Steering response will suffer
  • Handling will suffer
  • Road hazard tolerance will suffer (i.e. damaged tires and rims)
If the bling look of the twenties is more important than the negatives, then use the tire size calculator as recommended by Justin and go for it.

^ In additional to handling, acceleration will also suffer. Most 20's are 3lbs-4lbs heavier than 19's. And since the bulk of tire weight is in the treads, the tire weight is only slightly less with a smaller sidewall tire.

An additional 3lbs-4lbs of rotating mass per corner =

The wheel weight is one issue, the distance of said mass to the axis of rotation is, if anything, even a bigger issue.

Said another way, take two wheel sizes of identical weight, say 19" and 20" with both wheels weighing in at 25 pounds. The car with smaller diameter wheels will handle better because of the reduction in the angular kinetic energy (think gyroscopic affect).

All the previous posts are true points but lets be honest the negative performance aspects to running 20 inch rims only matter if you use your car for racing.

Im pretty sure your car with 20s will be fast enough and handle well enough to make it to the grocery store and back.

Seriously though if i were you id start looking for a used set of rims unless you have your heart set on a particular set. Sometimes you can get really nice stuff for a fraction of the price when new. You just have to be patient and wait for something you like.

I beg to differ, even a ham-handed driver should be able to feel the difference in the steering (or seeming lack thereof) on normal surface streets.

Of course you can feel the difference im just saying that the difference is negligible unless you are super anal about handling or are a race car driver.

Meaning the car with 20's will drive differently but still well enough to make it to the dry cleaners.

Yeah, maybe, until you hit a pot hole and bubble a sidewall which then blows out two blocks later. Long story short, 20" wheels are all show and no go.

I have a question. I'm looking at a uses set of 20's as well. Guy has them on a 99 Maxima. I think they'll fit but I'm no expert. Anybody know for sure that they'll fit? Thanks

Yikes! Putting twenties on a 3G TL is sacrilege; please don't, you'll ruin the dynamics of the car not to mention make it look like a chump wagon.

Well, I suppose beauty is in the eye of the beholder; to my eye I see a car seriously hamstrung which would easily get whipped on the streets by a stock Civic. You put those abominations on your TL and you'll be relegated to sub-speed limit travel on all but the smoothest and straightest roads.

OP do what pleases you. At the end of the day, you’re the one driving it.

I'm with horseshoez on this. Having said that, everyone has their own preference when it comes to their car. I'm more of a function over form guy, which explains why I have 17's on a 4G TL. But if you're looking for some 20's, you might check out the specs and pricing on Tirerack. It also shows a side profile of your car and color with the wheels superimposed to give you a decent idea of how it would look.

There are a few that are 22-24 lbs, which is pretty darn good for a 20". The Motegi MR126 is decent. Only 22 lbs and $271 each.

Enkei has a few decent ones as well. Not too heavy and reasonably priced:

I literally joined these forum to see opinions on wheels for my ‘12 TL.

Does anyone have a picture or have you seen a 4th gen TL on MRR H3 or similar wheels? That’s the look I think I like. Also I don’t know a whole lot, actually I know nothing much about what looks good and fits but I just know that I do like those specific wheels.
