How much wider is 245 over 235 tires?

For example: 235/45-17

1st number is Secion Width - the widest part of the tire. It's in mm, i.e. Section Width = 235 mm.

2nd number is the Aspect Ratio. This is effectively the sidewall height. It is a percentage of the Section Width. In the example "45" Aspect Ratio means 235 mm x 45% or about 106 mm.

3rd number is the diameter of the wheel the tire fits and/or the inner diameter of the tire, in the exapmle 17 inches.


Now all that said, what you see listed for a tire is theoretical. There is some variation in the actual aspect ratio given 235/45 = 106mm vs the Actual side-wall height.

Also two tires with a 235 Section Width can have significantly different Tread Width. This is in part from tire design and in part from the fact that there is not standard way to measure Tread Width. Bridgestone for example is notorius for having narrow tires compared to other brands with the same Section Width.

Thanks, I had 235/30/20 but I wanted more rubber protection, I had bent my rims in one summer, so now I'm thinking 245/35/20
