Tire Up-size on Stock Wheels

Currently my stockers have 245/50/17. Has anybody gone up to a 55 sidewall and noticed more comfort?

Currently the car has Michelin Primacy MXM4. Are there any better grand touring tires out there?

in general; you want to keep rolling diameter the same as stock...so your speedometer and odometer will be spot on.
you can use a tire calculator to figure out if moving up in sidewall will keep the diameter the same.

Moving from 245/50 R17 tires to 245/55 R17 tires will not make much of a difference as doing so will add less than a half inch to the sidewall height; that said, it will definitely affect your speedometer and odometer in that they will both register low.
There are lots of Grand Touring tires out there in the size range you're looking for; the Continental ExtremeContact DWS 06 tires, in spite of the fact they are rated as Ultra High Performance All-Season tires have a reputation for good ride comfort.

Yeah man that's my favorite tire. I had that on my Lexus IS250 before i sold it. I recently got those for my corvette.

But for the Acura, i'd get something like Bridgestone Turanza Serenity, or Continental Contipro Contact. Not sure yet.

That being said, these Michelins MXM4 are pretty decent.

I drive 225 55 17 winter tires sure it is better ride but snow tires are soft too, however it minor change..
However I check out all the grand touring tires Like Michelin Premier A/S (#1 rated on tire rack for your size) , Pirelli Cinturato P7 All Season Plus or Bridgestone Serenity (My wife loved them on the 19inch before I changed to summer only winter only.) They generally are a smooth ride vs performance a/s

I'm having a new set of 235/45 R17 Pirelli Cinturato P7 All Season Plus tires mounted on my TL in two weeks.

When I looked at the OEM tires on TL , the Michelin MXM4 would end up like 12 to 15 in ratings (so If you think those are ok , I would definitely check the best in category before changing tire size) and Eagle RS (what came with the 19inch rim) sux'd they were near last. I drove them home on the first drive when we bought the TL new. It was cold, mixed ice snow recently(so wet crappy roads) and just crappy post minor storm night. I went through all the cold conditions and I knew I would not be keeping those tires. So I sold my new Eagles to discount tire and got my wife Bridgestones. However I did go with tireracks recommendation that I could go 255 40 19 to slightly smooth the ride out, so I tired it and it actually seemed to take the edge off the bumps. My wife said it was night and day going from Eagles to Bridgestone. The grand touring tires were definitely smoother that high performance all season. Seriously how much high performance am I going to do in MN in the winter.
(Fun Stuff)
Though the last snow storm was freaking awesome. There was 10 cars in the apartment complex trying to get their parking spots or garages. My garage was a snow bank and I drove into, opened the door and snow was quarter up the door then just drove into the garage. The neighbor was stuck in the snow, and he said you pulled into a snow bank like it was not there. (Just add the snow line up over my wheels on my avatar) I ended up loaning 2 shovels, I was able to put the chains out of my trunk and loaned to a person that fit my tires and used up 20 zip ties studs, ended up getting 7 cars to their spots without pushing. My wife joked to her workers I am sure he is out driving in the mess for fun. My wife who has snow tires, spent more time stuck on ramps where cars were getting stuck. She had people following her , cause she was plowing through streets where people could not get through. Next morning someone had put 50 dollars in envelope under our door as thanks.

Why are you going down in width and sidewall? Are you lowered?

My car is a 3G; that said, for whatever odd reason, the Pirelli tires I'm putting on have a wider tread width spec than the 245/45 R17 tires. Go figure.

I have 225/55/17 on my 2013 Acura TL. The ride is pretty much the same. My car sucks in the snow cause my tires are Ultra High Perfomance All Season Taiwan made tires. So definitely I will be switching to a better brand once these wear out. The brand I have now are Presa and they horrible in snow.

I'm trying to figure out why they would rub; the thing is, 225/55 R17 tires are nearly an inch narrower than the OEM spec 245/50 R17 and have virtually the same outer diameter. If anything, the OEM tires are likely to rub compared to the skinny 225 tires.

Moving to 245/55 R17 or even 255/55 R17 will be more of a crap shoot, that will increase the diameter of the tires and may well encounter rubbing issues. Consider the following:
  • 225/55 R17 -- Diameter: ~27.0"
  • 245/50 R17 -- Diameter: ~26.9" (OEM size)
  • 245/55 R17 -- Diameter: ~27.6"
  • 255/55 R17 -- Diameter: ~28.3"
Going with either of the latter two tires will cause a fair amount of speedometer and odometer error, and while the 245/55 R17s may not rub, there is a pretty good chance the 255/55 R17s will.

I wonder if my car having 225/55/17 the reason I’m having trouble in snow. I had a 2007 Civic with 16 inch General Altimax tires and it was a plow even in deep snow. My TL kept spinning and losing traction all this winter.

I doubt it; generally speaking, the narrower the tire the better it is in the snow. I ran 225 width winter tires on my 530i and it was virtually unstoppable in snow so deep the bumper did double duty as a snow plow.

Wow I wish I could get that amount of handling and grip in the snow but so far this car has been a disappointment in the snow with Presa Psas1 tires. Definitely a brand I’d tell anyone to stay away from.

I originally ran Michelin Arctic Alpin tires on that car, and when they wore out I ran Michelin X-Ice; both were winter tires and were nothing short of amazing in the snow.

I’m thinking of going back to Michelin but the price of $290 per tires scares me away. I been thinking of going with General Tire again.

Yikes! I just bought a set of very nice Pirellis for something like $160 per tire.

I paid $400 for all 4 of these crap Presa tires and it included mounting and balance for that set price and I regret it. I was better off keeping all of the stock tires that came with the car even if they were all cracking. But one had a nail so I was desperate to change out to a fresh set.

For winter the narrower the better.

I used Pirelli Sottozero 3 winter tires on my vette and they were pretty good. Although i was running 295 (285 stock size) in the rear. It still gripped pretty well and was phenomenal in rain and snow.
