Tire pressure gage replacement 2012 TL

I broke the stem on my tire when I was filling up the tire with air. I replaced the tire at that time with the donut spare. I did not drive on the tire with the broken stem. The dealer told me they could not just replace only the stem when I asked them. They said they had to replace the pressure gage as well which they did and charged me for it as well as the stem. Was it necessary to replace the pressure gage?

yes, the TPMS or Tire Pressure Monitoring System is built into the stem.
it looks like a funny rounded, squished pentagon with a stem protruding out of it!

What broke was the tip where the thread is where you put the air pump connector. The first guy at Acura told me you just have to replace the stem but the second guy when I went in for the repair said tht it can't be done without the pressure nportion. They charged me $153.16 for the sensor assembly,T
PArt# 42753-TY2-A51 and $8.28 for the TMPS Valve nut and $6.23 for the valve washer plus half hour labor. (Parts less 10% discount).

I guess I'm questioning the whole thing because the first guy a spoke to when I made the appointment said the stem could be replaced on it's own for $40-45.

I just bought four tpms sensors for my new winter wheels and they were 50 bucks apiece Canadian, that’s about 40 bucks American. Was it a dealer that you went to? If so, lesson learned I guess. Don’t go to a dealer for anything that can be done somewhere else much cheaper. You should have had to pay about $40 and that is the entire tpms sensor, not just the valve. Plus a little labour, I’m thinking about 10 minutes or so as long as they didn’t run into problems.

maybe the first guy had a case of "I dont know what I'm talking about"
as most people are visual creatures, once you had shown the broken unit, the 2nd guy took the appropriate action?

I do know that if you dont want the car screaming at you for tire pressure; that it's imparative to buy the unit.
Could you have gotten away with the broken stem? maybe. could you have gotten away with a stem replacement? maybe. Could you have gotten away with a cheaper alternative like MarcoNorthPolo is suggesting? maybe.
what you did get is an OEM replacement that you know works. Pricey, but we live and we learn

Yeah, discount tire can do all of that for less than half the price.
