Summer tires
hey peeps, what are your thoughts on summer tires?
im buying 20" cv3s for the summer but im not sure if i should go all out for the tires, a lot of people have been telling me that a middle shelf tire will be fine for 3 years of summer use only..
im looking at the minerva f105 tire, anyone have any experience with this tire? or lower end tires for that matter, for the winter i have a pair of bridgestone winter tires so im good there, so these will only be used in the summer rims/tires.

Depends on what it is you're after. You sure do want to be satisfied with your choice during those summer months when you'll be putting your ride through its paces. I currently run Continental Extreme Contact DW's. Relatively quiet and sticky. Really good performer in the rain. Like you, I run them during the warm weather months (April - October). I am pleased with my choice.

he mentioned his rims. 20 inch vossen CV3's, which EVERY one and their mother runs.
he's wanting a lower end tire made for stretching. or something that will showcase his rims. and he will only run this combo for the "summer" months, as he has a dedicated winter set up.
Which I think is stupid.
butt, to each his own.
if he wants to run a lower end tire to better show off his rims, so be it.
I, and many other performance minded people balk at this thought

Just ordered a set today from tirerack. Kumho Ecsta SPT, ran me $500 shipped. I guess it depends on application. Ill be running a stretch and already know will have camber wear with the new set up so I picked middle of the road tires that I can rotate and flip (doesnt matter which side faces the outside).

In my opinion, tires are one of those things you probably don't want to go cheap on. Even if you're just running it in the summer, you risk the chance of tire failure, poor emergency handling, or just plain bad performance and loud tire noises.
I had Michelin PSS on my Infiniti for my summer wheels, and those were hands down my favorite 3 season tires. I also had ran Continental ExtremeContact DW before and those were pretty good but had a softer sidewall.
For a lower priced summer tire, Yokohama S drive is pretty decent, so is BFG g-force, and also Bridgestone S-04. But honestly my recommendation would be to pay the couple hundred extra and get the Continentals...really good performance for the price. I think it pays off in the end and keeps you safer.

Unfortunately, some people are totally unaware of how important tires are.
This is what I keep telling people :
No matter how good it is the suspension tuning and/or how advance it is the torque-vectoring AWD system, it all comes down to the 4 small patches of tire rubber that come in contact with the roads.
Never skimp on tires.
