Powder Coating Rims. Opinions?
So I've been thinking of getting my wheels (18" on a '09 TL sh-awd) powder coated gunmetal as opposed to buying new wheels at the moment for cost reasons. To that end I've found a few places in the ATL, GA area that do it but I have no idea what to look for in a shop. I've been reading that PC'ing can structurally damage your wheels over time. Any thoughts on that?

So, I spoke to my materials scientist friend. Too many unkowns for you to have a straight answer. If the wheels were simply forged and not heat treated afterwards in any way, which he thinks is most likely the case, by curing them at 400 degrees F for "long enough" you might indeed weaken them as the the beneficial effects of strain hardening that occurs during the forging process might be reversed. That was going to be my initial response based on the introductory materials science class I took 15 years ago, but here we have it confirmed by an expert. Regardless, a specific answer cannot be reached without knowing if the wheels were heat treated after being forged and how long they will be cured for during powder coating at 400 degrees F.

Depending on the color you go.. the wheels will bake no more than 400 degrees for no more than 15 min. Most mirror colors bake at 400 for 10 min. If the coater is good, he can bake at ~350 for about 15 min as oppose to 10 min at 400. But then again, any good coater will know what to do

Ok, so I found a place in the A that does painting. Looks like it'll run me abt $700 for all 4.

I got it done at a local body shop in Enterprise, Alabama called Wiggins Kustomz. I paid 600 for the grill, fog light housing and the wheels. So 700 seems high
