Software Update for Lock-up Clutch function
 
Hi, so I received a letter in the mail in regards to another recall. When I open the letter Acura said that my car needs to be brought In for Software update for the transmission base on the isues such as vibration and judder from speed ranges between 20-45 mph. A member on here mention this before I don't think they started a thread about the recall notice. Anyway just wanted to share this with the community so that the message is cascaded and it helps those in need to inquire about this when at the dealer. Back in June I had brought this up to my SA and they said don't worry your fine come to find out Acura is sending out recall letters regarding this service. In addition If they do the service it is also required for them to changet the transmission fluid which is a +. The car has 89k on it now and I just change the Trans fluid at 80k. I'll post a picture of the letter later.. the letter also said that the torque converter warranty was extended for 8 years or 105k whichever came first. I'm thinking might as well I had went an got the sh-AWD model since the torque converter in the FWD has issues as well.

Huh... Can you elaborate on what you were feeling with your car? Mine seems to be experiencing shaking/vibration at that range.

09-11, but i have a 10 FWD i thought it mostly or only occyred with the SH-AWD models when i took it to the dealer they said my car was apart of the recall and did the service while doing an oil change. It took about 2.5 hours they said the software update was loading slowly :pc:

Ohh great.. thanks for posting this. Anyone know if there is a way to tell if this service was completed on a car? Maybe there is something on the navi screen with versions of the software? I have a 2009 TL Tech with 230k miles. I don't have any shaking vibration, but wouldn't a new software update just be good to do anyway if there are known problems? "No action is required on your part unless you experience a problem" I read that as: "If you don't have a problem, let our software F up your torque converter so you can come in for service when your car is out of warranty" :-)

I got the letter as well. Ive been experiencing the same vibrations, shudders and stalls at said RPMS, also, My car literaly stalls EVERY TIME im parking on a incline. Basically ANY TIME there is a Gradual acceleration that seems to trip out my transmission. Hope this fixes that.

I just got the letter and called my dealer and they said they had to diagnose my vehicle first to see if there is a problem and it would cost me $120 if the software update wasn't needed.
If the diagnostic came back that i needed the software update then they wouldn't charge me. SMH, not sure if anyone else expereienced this.
My RPM's rev up when i'm between 20-40mph, not sure if that pertains to the lock up clutch software update issue or not.

i dont think there should be a charge if you bring it in with the letter i think that's bs and they are trying to take advantage. What is the mane of your dealer?

Some people are saying that dealers are charging to diagnose if u need the update. That's entirely unethical. I would speak to the general manager (the person overseeing the whole operation at the dealer).

Inwent to acura ofnoakland California with my letter and said I need tlook get the recall ECU update. Dropped my car off and the update was done. They didn't dare tell me it was a diagnostic fee. That's rediculous. The update is for all models 2009-2014 models not just those who have issues. To anyone who is being charged for diagnostics on a recall should speak to the manager and tell them Acura drivers across the country aren't being bathed for this...convey to them this recall software update wasn't your doing. It was the thousands of mismapped engines ECUS THEY pit on their cars. I would have gone off like a devil in a church of my dealer even hinted a charge. I am willing to call on anyone's behalf the dispute a diagnostic charge on a recall. Honda Corp pays for the labor! If they are charging u it's u ethical and potentially illegal depending on your state and local laws. Sorry- I'm so upset about this. But the update did make a difference. Huge. My car feels brand new. Even a few notches u on the mpg as well.

I wonder what Honda is specifically referring to when they say "judder". Based on the hundreds of posts across numerous threads on this site, there appear to be many different symptoms:
- Tach hunting at low RPM's (bouncing up and down when trying to lightly accelerate in a higher gear)
- RPM raising then lowering upon light acceleration in the same gear (torque converter locking up after a brief lag time)
- Car bouncing/jerking after shift from 1st to 2nd, or 2nd to 3rd
- Various other symptoms that I can't recall right now

Some of these symptoms don't necessarily classify as a "judder", but are issues nonetheless. On the bright side, it seems as though for the people who did have any of the above issues, the software update did either eliminate the issue entirely or at least mitigate it to an acceptable level. I have my appointment set for the 17th, so here's to hoping it all works out, and they sure as hell better not charge me for it.

I also wonder how much of the fix is from the software update itself or if it's from the fresh fluid. I've already had a software update performed on my 2012 FWD last year (no idea what software # it is since they didn't put it on the invoice), but it did not improve a thing until I finally performed a 3x3 with the transmission fluid.

I'm so happy to hear that it made a big difference on your TL! I own a 2012 TL SH-AWD and I've been complaining to my wife that my 2006 TL was so much smoother shifting. I'm going in on Monday to have the lock-up clutch function software update done and I'm hoping that this will make me love like driving my car as I did with my 2006 TL, instead of wanting to take my wife's Acura RDX everywhere. Thanks again for letting people know that it made a difference!

Software update did seem to help my car in some areas, but I still get the rough jerk from 1st to 2nd when the car is cold. The transmission seems to be holding gears for just a tiny bit longer before shifting though which is nice.

Heads up to those who are not experiencing issues w/ the torque converter: they update the software and also change your transmission oil as well. If you're not having issues you can probably hold off on it until you need a transmission oil change anyway and get it done for free. I had mine replaced at ~50k and now at 80k when they did it under warranty for free.

I am @ 230k with my 2009 TL Tech FWD. I'm within the years, but certainly mileage is over. Local dealership wants to charge $60 just to have the software updated. I kind of disagree with the mileage, esp. just to update the software. City stop and go drivers that drive a few miles a day that are at like 100k miles it would be covered. But a car that spent it's entire life in 5th gear would not be covered, probably less strain than a car w/city driving for it's entire life. Why don't cars have hour meters in them, I mean my lawnmower has one, let's go with hours used, that might be a little more accurate when combined with mileage...

Software update only was completed by dealership. I will be doing the 3x3 ATF change myself. It really seems a lot smoother between shifts even without the ATF change which I didn't expect @ all. But then again, it could just all be in my head... Thanks again for posting these letters that you receive!
