Rusty rotors

I have an 09 TL and notice my rotors are rusting...does the factory warranty cover this?

if its around the hub area, you can paint them black.

any rust that accumulates on the surface of the rotor will get wiped clean once the brakes are applied.

If its the rears that are rusting bad you might wanna consider checkin ur parking brake adjustment. Ive seen cars with too much drag cook and burn the coating right off the rotor and therfore leaving it exposed and more prone to rusting.

About 3 months ago on my '10 TL SH-AWD 6MT the dealership provided me a loaner for the day, removed all rust, repainted my hubs and rotated my tires. This was done at no cost to me and looked good when they were done. I have read a couple postings in other threads where this has been done by the dealership.

I simply said that a 40k car with rusty hubs and rotors didn't make any sense to me and would they take care of that for me. Service manager said they would but that it would only happen again. I said thanks, when can we schedule it and that was it. I feel the dealership I use is a pretty customer-oriented outfit. I have since traded in for a 2012 and now will ask them to address the exhaust tips that are at different heights.

Spoke to dealer yesterday and was told if the car has less than 12K they will repaint them once. After that they consider it cosmetic and will not cover. Mine rusted and I used a rust eater/preventer and then painted them black. You can also have them powder coated any color you want.
Hope this helps...

The warranty does not cover this. Several other cars of the same class have this problem. The problem is more visible on the TL because the rotors are bigger than others. It is disappointing for a car of this price.

If you live in an area where salt and calcium are used on roads during the winter, I suggest you paint them yourself. Your dealer may wish to do so but it could rush through the prep work before painting.

I painted my calipers and rotors and I removed as much rust as possible before doing so. The operation took me two days (12 hours). I used the G2 caliper paint system. This is an epoxy paint. So far the result is fine. Time will tell if the paint will hold. The manufacturer offers a replacement warranty for its product.

I tried the VHT caliper paint before the G2. The result was not very convincing. The painting was very fragile. I removed it easily with a brake cleaner.

Paint the hubs or upgrade, PowerSlot,StopTech , R1 concepts, EBC rotors offer Rotors with Black Electro Coated Hubs that are rust resistant, and slotted rotors allow for water to escape off the surface of the rotor so less likely for warping.

i always thought that if the rotors were slotted or drilled - it made them more prone to warping as the material is weaker/thinner than a solid rotor??

only drilled rotors are prone to cracking.
think about it. you're drilling multiple holes in close proximity to each other into a solid piece.

Slotted : No.
Drilled : Depends.

If the drilled rotor is designed and manufactured from the beginning as a drilled rotor, then it is not prone to warping.

But if a shop drills holes in a regular blank rotor and sells the resulting product as a drilled rotor, then it is prone to warping; since the structural integrity of the original rotor has been compromised, and the drilling reduces the metal mass on the rotor to absorb and dissipate heat.

If the dealer is considering it cosmetic damage, does anyone know how much it would cost to have them do it? I just got a 2010 TL SH-AWD w Tech Package, and the rotors look like they have 100 years of rust on them.

Easy fix. Remove all 4 wheels, brush the rotors, hubs and calipers with a steel wire brush, after you agitate and remove more the rust, spray them with brake cleaner. Scrub them again with the brush. Brake cleaner. MF towel to wipe them clean. Tape off as much as you can. Spray 3 coats of paint.

I had my back brake pads replaced mid-April. At that time my front brakes were fine. Today I am in for annual inspection and they tell me the front rotor has such extreme rust Build up that it has cut through the pads and cracked the one brake. Rotors unable to be machined because they'll be below the state mandate (PA). Need new rotors and brakes.....is this possible for such buildup and damage from rust in only 3 months on a 2010 TSX with 35K miles all OEM parts on car? I drive the car daily, will occasionally sit for a day over the weekend.
