EPS Failure

Double check the code to confirm with a compatible scanner.
There isn't an EPS 23 but does have a 32-1 DTC Control Unit Internal Circuit (Current Sensor)
The control unit is a common culprit as I have replaced a handful.

That sucks. I wondered about the long term reliability of the EPS system. Keep us posted on your solution.

Themuffinman- This problem can be consistent where you will have zero power assist (at times completely locked) or intermittently where everything is back to normal like nothing happened.
I'm not too sure on part numbers as I am more involved in the service side but that seems to be the part you need. As far as labor, you are looking at 2 1/2- 3 hours for replacement of eps unit and torque sensor/all sensor calibration.

CurrentDraw - thanks a ton. I'm a big DIYer and pretty familiar with navigating Majestic/Bernardi/etc and am swinging by Acura today which may have them scan the vehicle. I've replaced SRS computers, airbags, seats, installed a supercharger, suspension, chipped an ECU, etc. Going to do some digging and see if I can replace the unit myself.
Is the calibration anything fancy? Or is it just a reset/calibrate switch in diagnostic mode?
May have to make my way up to you since I'm in Virginia

EPS failed again after lunch today. Not nearly as cold as the other night. Swung by Acura dealer and we confirmed the diagnosis.
Car will need to have the EPS control unit replaced and the car will need to be calibrated. Dealer is required for calibration from the sounds of it.

Contacted Acura Client Relations today and have requested a Good Will consideration for the issue. I'm headed to my mechanic shortly to get receipts of all the work done on the vehicle thus far.
Should hear back from ACR tomorrow with at least an initial status. I'm being told power steering does not fall under the power train warranty (6 year / 70k miles)

So, update from Acura Client Relations. They are declining a Good Will Warranty Extension/Exemption/etc due to my mileage (77k) where the manufacturer warranty ends at 50k.
HOWEVER
Because I've (and my family) have owned 10 million Honda/Acura vehicles:
- 97 Honda Accord
- 96 Honda Accord
- 03 Honda Pilot
- 04 Honda S2000
- 13 Acura TL
Family:
- 91 Honda Accord
- 01 Honda Odyssey
- 11 Honda Pilot
- 11 Honda CRV
- 06 Honda Civic
- 12 Honda CRV
I'm being gifted an "Acura Courtesy Card" which is effectively a Visa gift card. That can be used for anything but the assumption would be I use it for the repairs (which I will be). Amount was acceptable (not full repair but close enough) however it will take ~2-3 weeks to arrive. Part is probably going to take at least a week to show up anyways so I'm not too worried about that.

Just as an additional update. The vehicle is being repaired today. I was quoted 1 hour of labor for the recalibration and .5 hr of labor for the installation. Since it'd only save me ~$60 to install the part myself the dealership is going to do all of it.
Total cost of repair is $177 (labor) and $454 (control unit).

You gotta do better than that if you want to be agitative.
But don't. Because it's not likely to end well for you.

I'm having the same issue on my Acura TSX SportsWagon 2012. I have 73K miles on it.
Checked Acura website. The part number is 39880-TL7-A01. The part only, costs around $850.
No luck finding the part on eBay.
I heard the part is the same as some of other TL models. Wondering if you guys happen to know which part numbers are essentially the same.
Thanks beforehand

BTW, I'm out of warranty just by 3-4 months (bought the car as CPO hence added coverage). Talked to Acura, they said they can't cover it under warranty. But if I get repair cost from the dealer, as "Good will" gesture, they would consider refunding some part of it. Dealer charges almost $200 for diagnostic (insane). If I find a used part, a local mechanic told me they'd charge me like $200 to replace it.
Acura doesn't say how much they would cover, considering the part only, is $850 wondering if it's all worth it to even take it to dealership or not. (assuming I can find the part)
Sounds like I will end up paying $1500 at the dealer based on an over the phone quote.
Any advice/idea is much appreciated.

Nearly 200K on my 2012 and no problems yet. I plan on keeping the car for another 100K or so if it keeps driving like it is now - pretty much the same as when I purchased it at 50K. Knock on wood.

I messaged acura Client relations to see if they will pay for my repairs since I was out of warranty! Got a case number so lets see how it goes!

Whoa extended warranty out to 15 years on this issue? That is nuts, and definitely something to keep an eye on.
I am wondering if Honda is being proactive on this because it could be a significant safety issue, maybe trying to avoid a recall?

This is great. Thanks for sharing.
I ended up getting a used part from eBay and having a local mechanic shop install it for me.
Cost me around $400 to get it done.
Hopefully it will not happen again, but if it does, it's good to know that now it's covered under warranty.

BTW, any ideas if there is a way to get Acura pay for my cost to replace the unit? I didn't do it at the dealership, so I assume it's probably not doable.

it wasn't "just heavy" at least in my case. It was almost impossible make any turn more than 20-30 degrees. It was ok to drive on a straight road with minor curves but good luck turning right/left without having to use all your strength to steer it and even then you'd end up backing a few times before you can make the turn.

Hi, this seems the best place to ask this question, direct me elsewhere if there’s a better place. I could not find anything specifically related to this in my search, and I’m not able to start a thread yet because I am new to the forum.
My 2010 TL SH AWD has a power steering glitch when the steering wheel is turned slightly to the right (left is fine) such as longer duration sweeper turns and on-ramps depending on how tight the radius is. The car holds a line fine with initial steering wheel input as I enter the turn. When I take steering angle out (but not if I add more steering angle) there is a resistance that wants to keep the steering wheel at that initial angle. Best way to describe it is the steering wants to remain in that initial slightly right turned position. When the resistance (tension) releases with a bit more pressure from me to bring it back to center or adjust mid-corner slightly, it comes back to the left more than I want because of the extra pressure I had to use and doesn’t make for smooth driving.
Only does this at slight steering angles when the wheel is turned to the right. Doesn’t do it on quick transitions, no issues on bigger wheel movements such as parking lots and taking turns at intersections but if I hold the initial slight steering angle for more than a second or two that is when the resistance is felt that I have to overcome returning steering back to the left.
I am new to electronic power steering, but something tells me there is either an adjustment or a replacement in my future.

My 2012 TL was showing signs of the EPS failing
A couple days before Valentine's Day my EPS sensor was going haywire then it went back normal then on Valentine's Day it totally went out I couldn't steer
worth nothing I was hesitant to take it to the dealer and ended up having to . When I called the dealership they looked up my VIN # it was covered under a extended warranty 🙌🏾 I brought my TL Used with 109 & some change, so either Honda/Acura knows this is a defect or I still had a warranty left
