As cold this morning in NH, grinding or higher rpm sound

Hi,
one hour ago when started up the TL to work, owning her for 3 years, never heard this kind of sound before. rpm went up to 2000 and heard something like grinding sound. I immedately got off the car and check around. was confused that if it is caused by higher rpm idling or oil got pushed to moving parts too slow causing the metal grinding? using 0w-20 mobile 1 1 year protection, and 80% oil life.

The high idle in extreme cold is normal for the J-Series engines; both my J30 and J32 do that. The grinding noise is most likely a pump or pulley and has nothing to do with the oil you use in the engine.

car is parked outside over night, in such the extremely frigid weather, engine wear at first startup looks like not avoidable. but pump or pulley will have grinding sound at cold?

see you have 2016 Mazda 3, I bought 2017 Mazda 6 in July/17, the cold start sound is terrible

Assuming you're running 0W-20, the amount of engine wear at cold-start is very minor and not worth worrying about. The thing about pumps and pulleys is they often use a porous oil impregnated bearing (something Chrysler patented back in like the early 1930s); as the bearing warms up oil starts to flow and lubricates the shaft. It isn't at all uncommon for bearings of this type to be a bit noisy when the engine is first started in extreme cold.

Here is a cool article about the bearing:
Regarding our Mazda3 with the same 2.5 liter mill as in your Mazda6; hmmm, the exhaust seems a bit raspy when first cold-started (we live on a farm and the cars are kept outside), but other than that it doesn't seem to be overly loud.

Check the ATF pump filter - I had a sound that came out of my engine that my brain instantly flagged as a bearing. I had a neighbor say the exact same thing. So my was under warrenty and ya the Acura tech said it was a ATF filter. Seriously I swear to god it sounded like metal on metal grind. Not saying it is your problem however if you cannot find the cause - replace that as last resort. Ya that noise on my car only appeared when I was above 2000rpms.

Sidenote: My car sat for 7 days of -10 to -22 nights and I was rather proud how strong the crank was. I spent a dime on a Odyssey Extreme 34R-PC1500T needs a spacer to install however well worth it for 850 CCAs deep cycle battery. Going see how it holds up with Car Cams and such long term. Though I still carry 2 jumper packs in the trunk for protection in the middle of no where, XP-10 Micro-Start and JumpnCarry JNC660 to help poor souls that needs help with weak batteries.

now I am thinking back, that sound somehow like spinning very fast with insufficient lubrication, little high pitch sound for seconds, went away when the rpm dropped down around 1.5k. like today, the temp is around 10F when started up the car, it is normal and smooth like a champ with rpm around 1.2k and dropping.

when you said atf pump filter, is it same as ATF filter? I replaced it 2 years ago for TSB of gurgling sound at cold start
