Ceramic pads...Yes or No?
Hi all,
Got a question for you all. Recently I upgraded my front pads to ceramic pads (Changed to new rotors too). These have got to be the noisiest pads I have ever had. When the pads are cold, they squeal like a pig until I brake about four or five times. Then, they quiet down and you never hear a peep from them again. It's weird. I took them back to O'Reilly's and exchanged them, but even the second set has the same issue. The pads are definitely cleaned (Less dust off the pads), but man, what a pain it is to listen to that every time you get into the car and drive off.
These pads had the backing so you don't have to put anti-squeal on it. I tried with and without that stuff, and no difference.
Anyone else have that issue?

go to heeltoeauto or xlr8 for pads and rotors.. dont use vatozone or pepperboys shit.
or you can just use oem.. dont cheap out on brakes, they save lives.

Do you have all the clips installed? Did you put the "stuff" on the back of the pads? I do have any problem with my ceramic pads, and I have them on all my vehicles.

Even if they have the backing, I always put paste/grease on the pads. I always run ceramic pads and never have a squealing issue. My friend has a bottle of synthetic brake grease that I use that works really well, I put it on the back of the pads and the ears of the pad to keep vibrational squeal at a minimum.

What are the makes and models of the aftermarket rotors and pads have you upgraded to ?
But bear in mind that high performance aftermarket pads tend to be noisier than OEM pads.

Id just stick to OEM pads, which are mostly ceramic anyways. Most of the automakers have gone to ceramic, with the exception of some of the Europeans. Aftermarket pads dont have the same standards to meet (if any) as the ones from the automakers. As well, OEM pads typically will have the best stopping distance, feel, etc for normal driving conditions, because the pad's friction material is dialed in for that specific model of car. Aftermarket pads are made using more of a universal friction material. For instance, they might have their "light truck" material, then their "passenger car" material, etc.. Not really model specific. I've solved more than a few brake issues here at work, especially on Japanese cars, by merely switching to the correct OEM pads and getting rid of the Autozone cheapy stuff. As well, aftermarket pads sometimes dont disapate heat correctly, which can lead to warping rotors prematurely. Toyota even had a bulletin or two out for this. All of this, on top of the fact that OEM Honda pads usually arent that far out of line on price.

I went with ceramic PosiQuiet pads from XLR8... they're not so quiet. When lightly braking they emit a squealing noise, but you can't hear it unless the windows are rolled down.
I'm not too worried about it. I probably should have put more anti-squeal grease stuff in more places, but I really don't feel like taking everything back apart.

Ceramic pads .... YES. Unless you are racing on a track.

NOT a fan of ceramic pads as they tend to cause more problems under severe braking and with pedal vibration (what people think of as "warped rotor").
Went to Performance Friction, Carbon Metallic pads several (~8?) years ago on my F350 4wd diesel and LOVED them. Since then I ran those pads on my 3rd gen TL and they were great. Have not needed brakes on the 4th gen TL yet, but will put these on when I do.

Interesting article about, the warped rotor myth that is part of the reason why I went to the carbon metallic pads.

With ceramic pads, if you run your finger across the face of the pads, you will notice dips and a rough surface. That is what's giving you the squeal noise when the brakes are applied. grease will not subside that. What you need to do is take the pads and rub the faces of them together as if you were washing your hands. This will smooth out the surface and prevent any squeal or grinding noise when the brakes are applied.

Burning Brakes
Wagner ThermoQuiet (Ceramic). The mechanics I know use them and I've been using them for years. Never had a hint of noise, work great, last long, and what little dust that is generated on some cars is easily cleaned away.
RockAuto.com has them at very low prices
