Acura TL 2009 Repainted Key

I bought my car used and I got the Driver 1 key pretty beat up so I decided to repaint it. I went for this solution so that I can put the key in the slot. I also considered 3M sheets as another option from previous AZ posts.

  • IMG_6204.JPG - I took out all the internals and I masked out the black areas.
  • IMG_6205.JPG - Make sure to mask the edges so that they snap back together. I used wet sandpaper to sand it down. I didn't remove the silver paint that was there before, I just sanded it down to make it smooth.
  • IMG_6206.JPG - I used Tamiya TS-30 color to spray paint it. I put the parts on a skewer so that I can hold the spray paint in 1 hand and the "key" parts in the other hand.
  • IMG_6208.JPG - I would practice on a sample part (Lego) to get the hang of it. I found it covered the parts very fast. You only need to hold it for 1-2 seconds. Once you are done, turn spray paint can upside down and hold it so it can to clear out the paint from the internal "spray tube". i.e. You can use it again later (6 months etc).
  • IMG_6211.JPG - I took out the masking tape.

Overall, it looks pretty good. I wasn't looking for perfection but it looks much better than before.

I really wish my non-tech keys didn't have painted buttons. Mine are chipping...I've considered painting them but the surface area on the circular buttons is much smaller, which I think would make it more difficult to paint. Has anyone painted their non-tech keys?

If the key can be taken apart, it probably can be repainted.

Well I am 100% doing this. How did is it holding up and did you use a primer first before spraying?

I'm considering spraying it all black. And once I go black, I am not going back.

I know this thread is old, but I have a question on disassembling the internals. How easy do the internals come out? Are they screwed in? Or do they snap out?
I've already sanded off all of the silver from my Driver 2 fob and I'm glad I revisited this thread because I didn't realize you had removed the guts. I almost goofed!

It's easy. Just open it like you are going to remove the battery. I would do a clear coat on the silver edges. It's starting to wear out again on my key. Good luck!
