2012 TL w/Aero Kit and Front Splash Guards

I've been driving around in the winter here in Canada with the roads being peppered with salt and sand. I noticed that without the front splash guards after the aero kit install there has been alot of build up around the bottom edges of the car. My fix - to modify the existing splash guards as a "winter add-on". I know some may think this is a huge faux pas, but it's practicallity what I'm going for here. They don't hug the side aero kit pieces as nicely as the original skirts, but that's something I'm willing to live with for the winter months.

With my little time these days, I built up these small aluminum adapters so that the original mounting holes could be used. I pop-riveted these brackets to the splash guards and voila! The picture illustrating the brackets is not the finished product since it's missing the bracket for the inner mount.

Jimmmer, you're going to have a difficult time preventing the now-sit-even-lower front splash guards from scrapping road bumps/low-curbs all the time.

Even with the front splash guards in the OEM (=higher) position, I had still managed to scrap them on several mall curb entryways.

Nice! Now get those gawd-awful locking lugnuts that stick out half an inch past the hub off there.

I will at a later date, most likely when they come off in the spring I'll put together a DIY or write something up with the dimensions of the plate's, hole size and rivet size I used, etc., but it's not a very difficult task. My garage is not heated (it's insulated though) so I walked through this as quickly as I could and I didn't take as many pictures as I probably should have.

I haven't hit yet, but I certainly pay close attention to speed bumps as I've read other posts of people saying they messed up their front splash guards. I have many years of experience driving lowered Prelude's (several generations), so if I see something big that I'm going to cross, I cross it diagonally or if I can, avoid it all together. If I remember correctly, the actual distance between the holes in the plate is 7/8", so that's the drop from original mounting holes.

Give me a p/n for locking lugs that will work, and I will rectify that problem ASAP. From day one, I've disliked them.

Cheers,
Jim

I THINK...THINK they're 12x1.5, at least that's what Honda/Acura has traditionally used. The MDX being the exception using 14x1.5 (and maybe the new TLs too - anyone know?)

Amazon agrees and says they'll fit, for what that's worth. These are 1.4 inch tall...and I don't know how tall those stock ones are.

I think it's a great idea. Looks like the car came with them. I have never had issues with my splash guards scraping at all?

is your car lowered at all?

cuz im maxing out on my tein ss suspensions.

i fitted the mud guards and im about less than 1 inch off the ground..

so there is no way for me to go through speed bumps at all being that low.

No, my TL is not lowered. I measured from the ground to the bottom of the splash guard on my car and it's 4". I will take a more accurate measurement once the slush and crap is off of it. Sigh, I hate seeing a new car go through its first winter!

I used aluminum to make the "prototype" since it's easy to cut. In fact, all I used was a pair of shears to cut it. However, I did paint them with flat black paint. I doubt the paint will hold up given the proximity to the wheel and the conditions it will be exposed to and the temperature and cure time I gave it. Next summer, I will make a set out of stainless and paint them appropriately with some sort of rock guard.

You do bring up an interesting point regarding aluminum oxidation. I got the aluminum from my father-in-law who is an industrial sheet metal worker. I will ask him what grade aluminum these plates are and their susceptibility to aluminum oxidation.

i have some customer that make aluminium frame for doors , windows. and with good metal preparation it will resist to corrosion, salt etc for many years.
if you choose stainless steel, there is different grades, those use for boat resist to salt corrosion. others basic stainless steel will have some pitting, but if it s hidden like you it won t bother you and will last for many years even with some pittings. be sure to use stainless steel rode or screw also

Neat little invention, and good advice from sebunet2005 with regards to various metals, anodized aluminum will also hold up very well, coating with etching or epoxy primer will also help.

Yes, they do work to protect the lower portion of your rear bumper. I was thinking of them the other day as they install with a painted piece of metal as well which is tucked behind the splash guard.

i would suggest for you to not do it if your lowered.

i mocked them up last week with painters tape, and let me tell you, you cannot go over a small speed bump without taring it off, it just doesn't seem possible to ride with it on.

but if your stock height, then you should have no problem.
