Pros and cons with a straight pipe exhaust setup?

Looking into getting my J-pipe in a few weeks and was thinking about doing a custom setup. Would be the jpipe, getting rid of the first 2 cats then into a pair Borla ProXS'.

Main question is, would this work? Or am I wasting my time?

you can get rid of the first 2 cats by buying pre-cat deletes that would directly bolt up to the jpipe.

then, you would exit into the borla mufflers...

this isnt exactly straight piping.
if you were to do a true straight pipe, your car would sound like CHIT!!!!!!!!!!

but as long as you have some type of muffler or resonator, she should sound nice and throaty

A straight pipe exhaust is literally just a straight pipe. It's when you remove the muffler, cat, etc. It looks like you're just talking about doing a custom exhaust with a different muffler? At least, that's what I hope as a straight pipe setup would be incredibly, ridiculously loud and obnoxious, not only to you but everyone on the road. You can certainly put a custom exhaust on this car, just don't expect too much out of it other than a different sound out of the car. If that's what you're aiming for, go for it.

You are essentially just describing Pre-Cat deletes through J-Pipe ending in Borla Exhausts. It will cost you well over a $1000 dollars to do this cleanly, not including install labor (if you arn't doing it yourself) and you might at best gain 20HP.

Up to you if that is worth it... I would just leave it at the J-Pipe, maybe swap out the exhausts if you need it a bit louder.

I had straight pipes and electric cut outs. Don't do it. I also agree that most custom exhausts are not straight pipes vice versa. If you decide to go with different mufflers it'll create a different tone. No you are not wasting money, the TL can sound very nice done right.

Anyone who gets a 20whp from a small N/A exhaust system mod will most likely be the first one to do it. Sound will improve with some type of muffler, straight pipes suck for sound

In turbo land catless down pipes can net near or just about 20whp on high boost. If headers were available for the TL that would be the way to go. The rest of the exhaust system out to the tail pipes really don't reflect any big changes on the dyno.

BMW's $1200+ performance system is listed by BMW at 8ftlbs & 5hp at high RPM

Product Description by BMW.

The BMW Performance exhaust system invigorates engine output by allowing engine by-products to exit the vehicle more efficiently. RPM performance is heightened and engine performance is increased by up to 5hp at 6000 RPM, but there's also another benefit. As RPMs escalate, so does the exhaust note, creating a racy but never intrusive sound.

Closest thing I ever had to straight pipes were 4" side pipes on my 6'7 Vette with 2.75" core straight through shake out glasspacks. It was mega loud.

With a completely straight exhaust you will be the envy of the neighborhood lol.

However on a serious note, don't do it (personal opinion only ). It will sound like a fart can on steroids and be a nuisance to almost everyone around you,not to mention you will probably get pulled over.

I am running the HFPC,j pipe and intake on the stock exhaust and IMO is probably the cleanest sound you can have. I had the CT Engineering axle back previously which is a great sounding system and i took it off in favor of my current set up.

I don't really see 20 whp gains out of this car with an exhaust. Maybe if it was a 3" and tuning was available.

Ah thanks for the opinions guys. Looking at it now, for the price of it all, I just might go with the xlr8 carless system or something. But that would be later on, grabbing that J-pipe first.

Was gonna ask to be EPs guinea pig for the FWD V2 J-Pipe and get some dyno numbers lol

Yeah, unless you have a turbo..."straight pipe(s)" only hurt over-all engine performance. N/A setups actually BENEFIT from a little back pressure (high flow cat or resonator/muffler).
