K & N Air filter experiment at Advanced Auto
Today I went to advanced auto to buy some filters for my 2011 acura TL. On the counter top I saw a little experiment kit that had two filters. K&N and regular paper filter.
They had a little fan sucking air through the filter and venting through a 1" dia pipe about 12 to 18" long. There was plastic ball which floated. It was a crude Rotameter
The guy there showed me three stages.
1. NO filter position - Ball reached to top of pipe
2. K & N Filter - about 90 % of height
3. Paper Filter - Did not leave the bottom.
Its a very convincing experiment.
I was wondering if people here have any thoughts on this. I would really appreciate your feedback.

Sure, it lets in more air.
but does it also let in more particles!?
the video doesnt tell you which part is the restrictive part on an engine.
Which would be the throttle body.
not the air filter.
On the 3rd Gen TL, we found that the stock paper filter out flows the throttle body at WOT.
I dont think the Honda engineers would work backwards on the 4G.

I agree it does not say anything about the particle size that will go through these K&N Filters. If throttle body is the one that controls the flow to the engine then it does not matter how big of a free flow air filter you put up stream it will not change the performance at all. The the question would come as do I want to change filter every year or clean one filter every year. Thats the only choice one can have.

I've had it in basically all my cars for the last 18 years - not a single issue, just keep it clean and lubed and never buy filters again every year, thus it will pay for itself by the time you would have replaced the OEM a second time.
In the past I have definitely felt improvement in terms of acceleration and gas mileage ('88 Civic, '94 Accord, '01 & '02 Odyssey, '03 Pilot, and several others, including my '04 & '10 TL, Toyota Sienna '98 & '04).

Thank you guys, Finally this time I went with a paper filter. I am not afraid of doing maintenance myself, but just could not convince myself. May be after next 12k I will get enough data to justify a $56 filter.

Come on, guys.
The other "K&N air filter" thread has been CLOSED.
Don't do anything stupid to this one.

If you do your own maintenance then paying the one time 35 dollar charge is well worth it, to me. One time fee, and you get to clean it and it has better airflow.
Some say more bad stuff gets by it, but I don't see how it could be a problem after all these years of K&N being a household name...
