TL 2009 Navigation System

Does anybody know what software is running the 2009 TL Navigation System?

It doesn't appear to be DVD based or Alpine based. And most of the features including AcruaLink and the hard drive based storage seems to indicate that it is running the Microsoft Auto 3.0 system. This is the same system available with Ford Sync.

Also the next update Oct 2009 according to Acura's site is about the same time that Microsoft Auto 4.0 is suppose to hit the market. Does anybody have any inside information on the new 2009 TL Navigation system?

System Operation

The Acura Navigation System with Voice Recognition™ tracks the TL's position based on positioning data from up to 12 orbiting Global Positioning Satellites (GPS). If GPS reception is blocked by a tall building, tunnel, or parking garage, within the TL an internal gyroscopic system and a speed sensor track the location of the vehicle to keep the mapping information current and reliable until satellite reception is restored. For the first time, the TL's navigation system stores its mapping data on an internal hard disk drive (HDD) media storage system. The same drive is also partitioned and used by the audio system to store audio files. Much faster than the DVD drive used previously, the new hard drive is the key to dramatic improvements in the system's search and routing speed. The system can be updated annually with the latest mapping information by inserting an update disc into the audio system's slot-loading CD/DVD drive. Updated DVD data discs are available for purchase on an annual basis on-line at www.acura.com, by calling 888-549-3798, or can be ordered in-car via the TL's AcuraLink® system.

The navigation system can be controlled by using the interface dial by choosing menu options or by spelling out a word (e.g., an address, business name or place). Characters on an on-screen keypad can be selected using the Interface Dial. For voice operation, the driver simply presses the "Talk" button on the steering wheel and says any of a number of preset command phrases. The system responds to over 700 command phrases, as well as to spoken city and street names. Voice recognition capability saves time and simplifies operation of the system.

The audio system is automatically muted when the "Talk" button is pressed, and an overhead array microphone receives the command from the driver. Commands can be given in plain English, like "Display gas stations," "Find nearest hospital," or "Find nearest Chinese restaurant." The 2009 TL's voice recognition technology allows the owner to simply speak city and street names aloud, and the system responds by displaying matches available in the database. Points of interest on the map (such as restaurants or grocery stores) can be displayed or you can have the system provide turn-by-turn navigation-all by voice command. The massive point-of-interest database includes phone numbers, which can be dialed by using the Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® system and the driver's cellular phone.

They should switch back!! The HFL is horrible and sucks. In my 3G I did not have to hit the annoying OK warning to use the HFL, it seems in the 4G you have to. On top of that once you select HFL and end the call you don't go back to MAP or AUDIO, another real pain in the butt. On the 3G I could start the trnasfer process so that as soon as the call connected I had it timed to transfer, in the 4G it has to connect before the transfer option shows up ont he screen and there does not seem to be a voice command to transfer or it is not there until the call is connected.

Your preaching to the choir. However, I don't think it's horrible and sucks, but rather missing a few elements that we all expected going from 3G to 4G, which left us asking the question, why did they change it when it was already good? Keep what works and make it better! It would be nice to know exactly why they changed from Alpine to Pioneer?
