New to Acura, Hard drive question

Hello! I tried search, but not getting the results I am looking for. Is it possible and easy to change the hard drive that came with car for a larger capacity one? Where in the car is it located. Sorry if these are noob questions, but I have only had the car about 3 hours and I am stuck at work instead of out playing...

If you do that, you might screw up the whole system! The hard drive is not only used for music, but also to store all the navigation information etc....

I do not know what format it is, so that you can mount it and copy it all, so you might be playing with fire, and a being left with a screwed up car....

:-)

Let us know how it turns out if you do this!

If no one has done this, I am not ready to be the first as I don't think that warranty will cover that. But I don't intend to wipe the original drive.

It sure would be nice if we could transfer data over to the drive via another means other than loading CDs.

I am trying to understand why someone wants to swap out the HD in the car? HD based car audio is a dying option, USB thumb drive is dirt cheap and no moving parts. You can't just go to computer store and use one of those drives. The HD in the car is made to much better specs to withstand wide ranges of temperature, humidity vibration. Think bout how many people you have herd that have had a bad drive in a car vs. one on their home computer.

Keith, you are not thinking grand enough. :-) The reason I want a bigger hard drive is because I have about 40gbs worth of music that I would not have to carry any extra devices around with it stored on. I use the usb port to connect and charge my phone with. Besides, I would be using an SSD. I don't buy conventional hard drives anymore!

I would put in a bigger hard drive too if this was possible. I will keep an eye on this thread.

Your best bet is to get the same type of HD ie; Toshiba, Seagate or Western Digital [in bigger capacity, of course] that comes with your car & get a HD Imager to copy your original HD to the new HD without skipping a beat,... Since cars are behind PC's & Mac's this "should" be relatively easy but the factors are still unknown... but like cyborgcnc said, If the format is unknown it might not work, but I'm "guessing" that the HD is running a Fat32 set-up. Fat32 is easier to copy & re-image to another HD,.... Linux is good for this because Linux can read any type of partition & will copy everything to your next HD,.... Good Luck & Please let US here know it if works & please do a DIY so the rest of can follow your lead,... I know I will,... TY in advance,...

I work in the IT field, so I think I can figure this out. Maybe this week, I can locate and pull drive just to get some specs. I am just concerned that they may have code on the font end of the drive that makes them the only ones the system will recognize.

Exactly where I was going with it...they can place all sorts of stuff on the boot sector, and messing with that or replacing, will render the system useless....

there is also always a product like Norton Ghost....it should be able to ghost any sort of drive, but again, if the File System is something proprietary transferring files would make it a challenge....

REALLY interested in finding out what your results are if you do decide to pull the drive....that would be some really handy information to have at hand....

Do not forget to have your camera ready, cause we also want some PICS!

linux and dd are your friends, find the drive, dump an image of it then dig around the image ( i dont trust ghost or any of the other vendor specific cloning processes. )

also something tells me that the hdd is buried within the headunit, as the trunk doesnt seem to have any spots for a hd, nor would it make any sense to locate it so far away from the unit.

I'm betting Clonezilla could copy it without issue.

I'd be interested in this as well, except that I have 520GB worth of music and it is the Acura file system limit that is my problem. It won't see all of my 112,000 MP3s.

PS. Honda craze in the field of protection of their rights. So just don't work - the disc is protected by the system password. Protection degree maximum. To remove the protection requires special equipment and software. Example:
