Larger Hard Drive

Has anybody tried to upgrade your 12.4GB hard drive for a larger one ?

maybe 350GB or 1TB.

I want to load pictures and a lot of music CD's on it.
Too bad it doesn't record DVD-A or music from DVD...

If you're going to have that much data (including the acura nav software) on the HDD, you might want to think about the reliability of putting in an HDD that I would assume you're buying off the shelf.

The existing HDD was most likely tested to automotive-level conditions which are just shy of military spec (not rad-hard) so it can survive shock, humidity and temp extremes. I would think to have 100GB+ capacity drive tested to those conditions would cost crazy $$$.

Just food for thought...Congrats on your 2010 TL!

I dont know how you could possibly have 350 gigs of music lol

Why not just get 2 160 gig ipods and you're done! (granted that would be more expensive, but you wouldn't have to rip the dash apart and clone the harddrive)

I agree with ckrieg, considering how cheap the ipod classics are (or any other HDD based player) compared to the other solution (i highly, highly doubt they made the HDD user-upgradable), 1 or 2 HDD-based players might be a more flexible option for you AND you don't have to fuss with the dash.

Honestly I doubt the software would scale to that many songs. The menus are already slow enough with what little I have on there so far.

i refuse to use my HDD... i feel like it will slow down my navi response and/or cause software issues

16GB Flash drives can be had for like $20-$30... pick up a few of them

Or like stated above, get a 160GB iPod

Granted its only a 13GB hard drive, its most likely a SSHD (solid state), to maintain reliability.... standard hard drives have a high rate of failure, when they are being moved around during operation

It's not SSD, its a regular hard drive but it's automotive grade, supplier is probably Toshiba. In fact if you listen closely to the center console you can hear it spin down a couple seconds after the car is shut off. They should use SSD, it would be seem like the perfect match for an automotive application. But you gotta remember that they're still much more expensive than hard drives and automotive companies tend to be behind the times when it comes to electronics. At least compared to a high-tech company like Apple or Sony or whatever.

The Audi A4 Nav comes with 40GB of space, that's a good size.
The NAV is probably in it's own partition so it will not slow down by pictures or songs data.

Another advantage of using a flashdrive or iPod is that you aren't stuck with an underwhelming 128kps sample rate. A shame this is the only rate on the HDD with such a great sound system.

If the TL GUI (graphic user interface) was more intuitive and didn't rely so much on the iPod/iPhone playlists, I would be using the HDD to the fullest. Since the HDD "burn to" quality is not scalable, and we're stuck with the fixed MP3 compression of 128kps, I too avoid the HDD. This is one of the Tech pack's hiccups. Always give options Honda/Acura!

Even if you could get the Navigation system partitioned correctly back in the TL and working, the current TL GUI sends me right back to the iPod. Maybe Apple should be more vocal in car systems and their media applications? They do everything else right?

I suppose... but they're not THAT expensive anymore... especially a 13gb... is like, what.... $80? $100? Acura couldnt swing for that?

I hope these HDDs dont fail in the future... b/c

a) its probably a BITCH to change and buried behind the NAV LCD
b) if you are out-of-warranty, and want to tackle it yourself, you'll need a copy of the Navi Image, which I am sure will be hard to get
c) they probably put some kind of "lock" so you cant use different or larger sized HDDs

actually...... I am curious...... anyone knows what kind of operating system is on the TL Navi unit?

Is it Win CE (pretty common for embedded system, like the Navi) or some proprietary system co-developed by Honda and some other computer company?
