DTS Audio vs DVD-Audio

Okay audiophiles... I've got about 10 DVD-Audios and they sound great in the TL. Unfortunately, the are damn hard/expensive to find. For those that have both DTS and DVD-A discs in their collections, how much different do they sound in the car? Do DTS discs still give decent 5.1 surround sound? Do DTS discs sound markedly better than regular CDs?

DVD-Audio is generally lossless recording meaning no compression, also DVD-A can be 96-bit. Honestly there shoudl be a differecne, but it all depends on how things were mastered and then at the end of the day we are talking about listening in a car, whihc is less than an optimal listening environment. A decent DTS or DVD-A disc shoudl sound richer in sound with more clarity and dynamic range, but again depends ont how it is master. I love Eagles Hotel California, mastered very well. Personally the SACD vs. DVD-A war killed any chance of a real hi-def audio format and then the reality is most consumers are listening to music via over compressed MP3 or AAC on they iPOD or similar device with crappy ear buds so there has been no real mainstream market for hi-def audio, such a shame!

Huskr, Keith is spot-on. You probably won't hear much difference between DTS and DVD-A. The master mixdown is the key. I've got tons of each format-both sound very good in the car. Heck, I used to be on DTS's distribution list for new audio releases-I sure miss the format. I've got some discs where the final mixdown is very uncreative. Some of the others are outstanding.

In the car you should not hear much difference. As others have said, it's more of how the surround mix was created as opposed to the audio quality. A DTS CD can sound great, as you already know.

There's a whole world out there where people are creating 5.1 mixes from stereo CDs and making their own DTS CDs and DVD-Audio discs, some sound amazing. Google and you will find some amazing things you can do with your PC and a CD/DVD burner!

My pick: DVD Audio

I own 30-40 DVDA'S, & 2or3 DTS discs.
For me, the richness & dynamic range od DVDA's, are unmatched.
The DTS discs, are certainly more entertaining, & better than CD's, IPod, or BT audio. My favorite of the lot is "Hell Freezes Over"/DTS.
That being said, enjoy them all, & hope for new releases!

CPR, I wish there would be new releases, but the format is dead. They are still making SACD's but unfortunately, no more DVD Audio releases.

Not exactly.

There are still DVD-Audio's from King Crimson, Steve Wilson, Porcupine Tree and a few others. Still, nothing like the early 2000's.

The best resource for good DVD-Audio discs these day is making your own!

I just got my car and the only two DVD-As I have are the demo disc I got with the came and Beatles "Love". The sound is superb so it's sad that such a great format is dead. I'll try to pick up a few more if I can.

Sorry Oblio, those are all old discs-not new releases.

King Crimson and some of the Porcupine Tree releases are "new" releases of older material. However, Steve Wilson's stuff is new, as is the latest Porcupine Tree disc. And there's 'Bass Communication', just came out!

Also, amazon.uk has the first Stephen Still album available for pre-order on CD+DVD-A! (Jan 31, 2011 release date)
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Stephen-Stil...8055030&sr=8-3

Granted, we're talking a small amount here, but these are still great discs. Try the CD+DVD-A of King Crimson's "In The Court of the Crimson King" in your ELS system and you will be totally amazed at the sound.

You can find these all on Amazon or you can get them directly from
http://www.burningshed.com/

The more people that support the few labels doing DVD-Audio the better. There's also a small label called 'Luminary Records' that just released a nice DVD-A that could be classified as 'World Music" from an artist called Dorothee Munyaneza. It's a very nice surround mix.

For those interested in what exactly came out on DVD-Audio, minus the crappy titles from Silverline, I have created a list that you can read HERE. (PS - No ads or pop ups!)

Sorry for the slight hijack (detour?), but does anyone know if the Dire Straits, Brothers in Arms dual-disc (one side CD, the other side DVD-A) will work in our cars?

Thanks.

Haven't tried that particular disk, but I can verify that two dualdisks by 3 Doors Down both work fine on the DVD-A side.
