With my 3G, I took the lines directly from the subwoofer to the amp. I'd assume you could do the same with the 4G. I haven't gone there since I'm plenty happy with the 4G's bass.

Adding an aftermarket Amp & Sub is simple. You can use an Amp with High or Speaker level inputs and take a feed directly from the stock sub.
Or you can use a Line out converter eg AudioControl LC2 to convert the speaker level feed taken from your Stock Sub to RCA (Low Level) if you purchased an Amp with RCA Input & Output only. In either scenario you will need to run a Power wire from the battery to your Amp location.
Some Amps can be triggered remotely when it senses a feed from the Head Unit or if you do not purchase an Amp with this option then you need to run a trigger (Remote) wire from the fuse box.
This is just a general idea and a basic install which can add a lot of depth to the system, of course there is a lot more you can do and have an awesome system while keeping the Stock Head Unit.
