For me it was a definite no I don't like the exterior styling (looks like a wannabe Cadillac CTS than an Acura), and I have learned over the years never buy the first year of a new generation because there will be improvements and solutions to problems coming out in subsequent years so I just got a smokin deal on 08 Lease since they are basically wholesaling them to make room for 09 and I will wait to see what they come out with next.

No, if I am going to pay the ridiculous price tag for the butt ugly re-design, I would rather just buy a BMW. In the meantime I will keep my 08 TL thank you.

Just this week an Acura dealer called me to find out if I have some interest in the 09 TL. As the owner of the 2g and 3g Acura, I had to say that given the new looks and the 5 speed transmision I'm not going to replace my 06 for a new Acura. His anwser was "beauty is in the eye of the beholder".

I'd live with that so-called butt ugly design before I'd buy a BMW.

Hmm, while I don't like th e09 TL, and I love my 08 Type-S, I may take advantage of the great Infiniti deals right now and make the jump now to a G35. You cna get a car for invoice and if trading a car you get $1000 rebate and 0.9% financing for 60 months!!Sure I'd rather have a G37 Sedan, but the way I trade them I'll wait till they have this deal next year on a G37 and swap again!

I just bought a new '08 with Navi because I like the styling better. I don't totally hate the styling of the entire '09, but Acura would DEFINATELY have to tone down that grille before I could consider buying it.

I have a friend who got an X5 back in the Spring. Biggest piece of shit he's ever owned. The 4WD differential started leaking, the backup camera stopped working, and the cooling portion of the heated and cooled seats stopped working within the 1st 2000 miles alone. This SUV has spent as much time at his BMW dealer's service dept as it has in his possesssion for a never ending variety of issues (especially electrical) since he got it, and they still can figure out why they can't get the seat cooling working. All this for the privilage of spending $60,000 !!

DMZ, it sounds like your friend got a lemon. He should turn the car back in and demand a different one. The Type S I bought was the same circumstance. A guy bought my car first (brand new) and turned it back in because "he didn't like the paint job". So he turned his car in for alot less reasons that your friend's BMW.
A few cars ago, I owned a BMW 535i. Cool car-white with red leather interior-so it had a rare combination of interior/exterior. I really wanted to love that car, but it was ALWAYS in the shop. It nickeled and dimed me to death!!! Before I bought my Type S, I reconsidered BMW. But everything I wanted to afford was a pre-owned BMW. Didn't feel like the new car pricing for them was worth the value.

Re-design is horrendous.
I'm ashamed to mention any of Acura's 09 Model lineups excluding the RDX and MDX.
So any pre-existing chance of upgrading to any 09 Acura is Slim to none.

I just can't get used to the look of the 09 TL. I can remember what a hit the 3G TL was, with almost everyone who saw the car from the first glance thought it was great looking. The 4G seems quite the opposite.

Since I'm relatively new to the Acura community (New Year's Day-this year) I don't remember how the 3G was received. But I read alot of the other 4G threads and see how well it WASN'T received originally.
Can someone who has been on Acurazine a long time comment to this?

The more things change, the more they stay the same. People complaining on the internet or Acurazine is nothing new. People predicted that the G1 TSX would get killed by the Mazda 6 when it came out, they complained about no V-6 option, they complained that the Accord was 'more car' for less money...
When the G2 TL came out they complained that it was made in America, they complained that the wheelbase got shorter, they complained about the cutline on the door/c-pillar, they complained that there was no 5-AT, they complained there were no side airbags they complained there was no MT option...
When the G3 TL came out they complained that it got shorter, they complained about the huge groove down the side, they complained that the ride was too stiff, they complained that the real aluminum trim rattled or dented, they complained about the vibration at 60 (ok that was a real issue), they complained that the cell phone they just bought didn't work with the car, they complained about butt prints in the leather, they complained about the smaller trunk (than G2), they complained that the 6-mt clutch engaged to quickly, then they complained when it went away....
YET, every version sold more than the previous version? Its sad that so many people have "tried and convicted" the new car and they haven't even seen it in the flesh or driven it yet.

New '09 TL?
Lease is up in March; ('05TL)
Deciding between '09 Infiniti G37 AWD, or '09 TL SHAWD
Probably go with Acura; have had 2 CL's & 1 TL; zero aggravation.
Acura gives more features for less money; Infiniti is like BMW & others;they
charge for almost all amenities

That's bullshit, trust me, people were complaining about the 3rd gen when it debuted. People weren't really saying that it was ugly, but that it was SOOO different stlye wise from the 2nd gen. Many people thought it was too sporty looking and complained that it was aimed at young folks instead of middle aged folks who could actually afford it. The complaints were ridiculous then, and they're ridiculous now. Same shit, different generation. But I doubt this generation will outsell the last, not necessarily because of the design, but because of the price of the car and the state of the economy. We'll see.

I'm just going to sit back and see how things flush out for now. I'm particulary interested in seeing whether a new Type-S shows up. Real world comparos with the competition would also bee enlightening. My 08 Type-S A-Spec has just hit 7,000 miles and is fully loaded with all options. I've been satisfied with the car and don't intend to lose money on it. That may ultimately be the deciding factor. If I really like the new car after evaluating it up close, and can sell my car without taking a bath - I just might do it. I'd have to REALLY LIKE the new car and get a deal that made it worthwhile to make the switch.

I'm a bit envy of the SH-AWD & the 305 HP .... but is it enough for me to trade in my type-s for the first year model ? Def. not ....
The butt looks very strange to me ... like a older CL's truck ... but I didn't like the 3G chesled shape when it first came out, so I might change my mind down the road ...

Having not seen the 09 up close, I will reserve final judgment for a later date. However, I really am disappointed by many elements of the new design. The front grill is hideous and some of the styling appears tacky. As an owner of an 04TL, I was anticipating a possible trade this year or next; I seriously doubt it will be an 09 or 10TL. Even if I were to consider another TL, I would want to make sure Acura does a better job removing the rattles from the 4G. My 04 has been a very good car except for all of the rattles - it has more rattles than the Ford Pinto I drove in HS.

I was sooo Looking Forward To The 4th Gen TL
What were they thinking?? Overstyled and overstated!
I'd buy a Cadillac CTS before I bought a new TL.
I'm considering either the G37 or IS350 to replace my beloved 05 NBP TL.
Both much better looking than the 4 Gen TL, and RWD.
Sorry Acura. Hope you guys still have a market for your cars.
Don't worry. Somebody will buy them. Heck, even Saturn sells some cars.

I'll look at the car, but there's little chance I'll buy it. Back in 2001 when I got my 2002 Navi TL-S, Acura was far and away the most advanced car in the $32K price range. I even forgave it when it blew out two transmissions and all the black started peeling off the window frames.
I now have the 2006 TL, and its been a better car in terms of transmission, but has so many little things wrong with it that the overall experience is that it feels like a cheaper car. The navi was out of calibration from day 1. The car rattled from day 1. The right rear tire has had a slow leak from day 1. None of these were bad enough to demonstrate to the service department to fix, but they add up to create a very "cheap" feeling driving experience.
There's no doubt that between Infinity, Acura, and Lexus that Acura is pulling up the rear now.
When the time comes next year, I'll probably step down to an Accord or a Maxima. The only thing that the Accord needs is the info panel on the dash for tire pressure and side mirrors that tilt down in reverse. Otherwise; I see no difference between the TL and the Accord. I'm not going to pay another $10K so I can have programmable wallpaper images on my navi screen.

I think the Type-S only shows up when the model is about dead. It's their last gasp to sell a few more cars of the old body style. There were two years of G2 TL-S, there were two years of G3 TL-S, and there will probably only be 2 years of G4 TL-S.

I would have to agree with Colin, always seems to be a lot of complainers on the forums. What originally sealed the deal for me on my '05 NBP TL was when I took the tester car out for a test drive, alone. I was neutral on the looks, it was nice, but I really liked the way it drove and handled. I also liked the interior very much, as well as the steering. It will be exactly the way I approach the '09. If I am impressed with the handling, ride and interior, that will weigh in heavily on my decision. I also think
the '09 looks great in black.
