Interesting thread OP.. Thanks for the read.
I think what it comes down to is how long and how hard you want to pinch your penny. There comes a time in life when you feel financially secure enough to purchase a nicer car or have the second toy car, and that feeling of security to pull the trigger is different for everyone. Some people get that feeling when they land their first job making $50k a year despite their $75k of student loan debt. Other people get that feeling when their house is paid for, 401k is sitting hefty and the kids are through college. It comes down to what the point is for you.
Of course being financially responsible earlier in life will reap greater rewards later in life. Obtaining that responsibility can take a fair amount of knowledge, responsibility and self constraint.
Now a TL is a great car that is very fun, but it is no Alpina. I purchased my TL-S 2 years prior with 45K miles for $25k in cash. I have a masters degree, no college debt, state board certification and a modest salary at one of the largest firms in my field. In my mind, I view that as a financially responsible decision despite being 23 at the time. I purchased a great car at a nice discount off sticker, that will last me a long time, be enjoyable and it looks fantastic. Now someone looking in from the outside may not think that, but remember everybody has a story and its not always what you think.
