Upgrade '99 TL: 2008 Type-S or 2012 SH-AWD?
Similar to the CPO thread, I'm interested in an upgrade. I have a 1999 3.2TL with 155K miles which I plan to give to my 16-year-old son and I'm looking for my next car. To be honest, I want something around $20K but I might go a little higher. I'm not interested in a new purchase due to the tremendous CAPEX.
I have been thinking about the 2007/2008 TL Type-S. I've always liked the looks of this car, but I've never driven one to know how it compares to my '99.
I do not like the 2009+ styling as much, but I'm amazed how the used value of the 2009-2011 TL non-SH-AWD is comparable to the value of the 2007/2008 Type-S (in my limited research). It appears I could easily get a standard 2010 TL for the same price or lower than a 2008 Type-S.
In reading the CPO thread, I saw some folks recommend buying the TLX since there was not much of an upgrade between the models the OP was mentioning. I assume my case is different since I'd be moving from a 15-year-old TL to a 8-year-old or less TL. What do you guys think? Thanks!

Understood. I imagine I'd like the SH-AWD higher-end model from what I've read, but I've not driven them nor do I think I could afford one at this time. I'm looking for pros/cons on Gen 3 vs Gen 4 besides the looks.

hands down money aside, the SH-AWD you will not regret it. this is coming from a 3G Type-s Owner.

The Original Shawdy
The type S is good for power but the 4G is more of a grown up car and still has great power. The look grows on you quick. AWD was a must for me but both FWD and AWD are nice.

I was considering the same thing back in 08 and then in 10 (i.e., picking up a leftover TLS in 08 versus a used one in '10 versus a new SH-AWD in '10). Once I drove the SH-AWD the choice was clear. The TLS is a sweet car, but the SH-AWD's capabilities and stability on the road are quite an improvement over the TLS. I think the electronics and interior are upgraded too.

It's either SH-AWD or nothing.

Other's opinions shouldn't matter much to you....
...you should get into the cars you're considering and get some time behind the wheels of each.
BUT, don't drive the SH-AWD or you'll end up buying one.

I had an 08 Type S before and I am currently driving an 09 SH-AWD. The Type S definitely felt like a more solid car, the steering was heavy, and a 6MT Type S will be faster than an auto SH-AWD. But I would take my SH-AWD over a Type S any day.

lots of good comments here.
if you want an Acura and want performance.. get a 4G 6MT SH-AWD. that is the best performing model.
the Type S is not a bad car..but that thing is FWD and torque steers. around a corner, the SH-AWD will leave a Type S in the dust.. the handling difference is night and day.
i almost bought a Type S and just couldn't get over the torque steer..i couldn't stand it. othe than that, a Type S is a great car.
the 4G is also quite a bit larger. more rear seat room for passengers. if you need space for kids, the 4G is a far better family car.
if you don't have kids.. and don't ned back seats..dont' get an Acura.. get a used Cayman!

Guys, I took Friday off and test drove a few cars:
- 2012 MDX (my wife was pushing me in this direction)
- 2012 TL FWD
- 2012 TL SH-AWD
I must say I liked the SH-AWD the most with the 18" wheels. None of these had the Tech pkg though (which I would prefer) and now I'm keeping my eyes peeled for a CPO 2012 SH-AWD. It appears the used market only has black or dark grey within 200 miles of me. What ever happened to that nice blue from the '08 Type S? I would love the 2012 TL with that blue! The color choices seem boring to me.

It sounds like you want something that will last and is a good investment. I see quite a bit of support for the SH-AWD system, but no one has brought up the increase in maintenance cost. There is a differential that needs servicing ($), the tires are larger and wear differently being AWD ($$), and there are more electronic components that could fail ($$$). Both of the options are great cars. I have personally seen more negotiating room in the values of the fourth generation due to their looks... I love everything that Acura makes, but you will be able to get a better deal on a 2009 base TL verses a rare, high-mileage, hard-to-find-in-good-shape 3rd generation Type S. The great news is that a base third generation TL versus a base fourth generation TL are about the same maintenance wise, even with a Type S in the mixture. The part costs are low, the maintenance plan is the same, and they hold value. It really comes down to looks, some tech, age, and if you are willing to wait for a good Type S to come around.
