Type fuel

Can anyone tell what type fuel to use in a 2013 TL? The sales person told me I could use regular.

I would follow the manufacturer's recommendation and use premium (91 or higher). This is what the engine was designed to use and you aren't going to save that much by going cheap.

There are probably a dozen threads on this, but really trust no one, read what the manual says.

Hey yall. I put some ethanol free regular gas in there and I heard some very disturbing knocking. Big mistake. I couldn't wait to burn through that shit.

i put some premium back in there and it was awesome. Purring performance.

The 3.7 Requires Premium if I recall so that is why you heard knocking, I believe only the 3.5 can run on regular.

If you look in the manual it actually says to use top tier premium fuel. So no Hess, BP, Racetrack, etc. Instead you should use Mobil, Chevron, Shell, etc.

Sunoco 93 grade all day every day! They used to have 94 but no longer

Btw, what's wrong with BP? I mean aside from spilling millions of barrels...

I use BP 93 octane fuel in mine and couldn't be happier. The car actually drives better with it over all the other gas companies 91 octane.

When I had a 3G TL, I would sometimes run 89 octane. But not in a 4G. I only run 91 premium.

on my former car, a 2004 S60R... it was VERY picky about gas... it was turbo charged and mine was chipped.. if I ran 91 octane it seemed fine.. BUT.. if I put in 100 octane RACE FUEL (unleaded), or if I mixed 91 with the 100..so that the net result was 93-95 octane - WOW... the car came alive... it was a night/day difference. tons smoother and way way way more pull when the turbo kicked in.. basically, on 91 octane it was probably pulling timing and running off it's peak... the high octane fuel let the car run as it was designed....

i'm curious.. on a car like our TL's.... would running 93 or 100 octane unleash extra power... or would it do absolutely nothing vs 91?

i'm curious if anyone has tried running 100 octane race fuel in their car? it certainly wouldn't hurt the car...it just might wind up being a big waste of money...

there is a gas station about 30 minutes from me that sells 100 octane at the pump... last time i bought it was 4-5 years ago... and it was like $6/gallon... if no one has tried it... i'll put a few gallons in next time I"m near emplty.. and see if it does much...

You're right, for some reason I thought BP wasn't top tier but it is.

No turbos react much differently to high octane fuel. For the TL 93 is most likely a bit better than 91 but that's about the limit before you really start to flush money out the tail pipe.

BTW some states like Carolina don't generally have 91 & skip from 89 to 93. My cars are moded to run quite a bit of extra boost on a 93/100 mix for 96/97 octane.

^on the 3rd gen TL's, we've monitored knock and found a mixture of 100 and 93 to make about 96 octane stops knock.

but again, it gets pretty pricey filling up with 100 octane...

I put regular in mine and heard a knocking noise as well. At the next service check in I told the guy about it and he said oh just put premium in. I was like you greedy bastards trying to squeeze more money out of me....suuuure the engine needs premium I thought manual be damned.

The wife put a tank of premium in the next fill up and haven't heard it since.
I'll be damned...

Depends on the price spread of 93 to 100. I pay an extra $24 per fill-up which lasts about 10 days. So for $2.40 a day 400whp/414ftlbs is such a deal.
