Trying to solve poor fuel economy mystery

Hi all,

I've been driving my 2012 Acura TL (SH-AWD 3.7L ~100k miles) for about a month now. When I got the car I noticed the fuel economy wasn't great (12-15mpg), assumed it was the way the previous owner drove it.

Since I've had the car, I have been trying to figure out how to get my fuel economy to normal levels, but the best I can get is 16-17mpg (60/40 highway/city). I'm using premium fuel, I drive super gentle almost never going above 2k rpm and I don't brake or accelerate hard.

No check engine light, no codes, nothing noticeably wrong with the driving experience at all. My mechanic says he didn't see anything that stuck out to him.

Is there anything I can do? Anywhere I can look to see if there's an issue? I love the car but this mileage is just too awful for what it should be!

Any suggestions are super appreciated!!!

THANKS

if you need more info just ask!

Check your plugs, air filter and tire pressure yet?

If you are driving with the HVAC on the Auto setting, the A/C is going to run almost all the time, even in cooler weather. In my locale, I don't need A/C in winter and even in summer, not always, at least in the morning. So I routinely set the HVAC to Auto, but then manually turn the A/C off (unless, of course, I need it). I have a 6MT, which I think does better than the Auto trans, but I average about 26 mpg in 75% highway/25% urban-suburban driving. In pure city driving, it drops closer to 18-20.

I wish this would could be the answer but I almost never have heat or AC on. Used to not having it in my old car 😂

Have you considered updating all four O2 sensors?
The car is 12 years old with 100K miles.
Take the OEM part numbers, plug them into Rock Auto & look at either Denso's or NTK's, save big $$ over dealer prices.

Since you’re at it buy some MAF sensor cleaner and clean your mass airflow sensor
might be dirty depending how frequently you change out your air filter

Are you resetting your MPG when you fill up the tank?

If there is no CEL on, the car is running as expected. So changing sensors, cleaning MAF's, etc is probably not going to be effective.

I have a 2013 TL FWD with 85k miles that I bought new here in So Cal. I drive casually, I do maintenance by the book, and I've always filled it with 91 octane from either Chevron or Mobil. I do mostly city driving and my mileage is almost always 13.9mpg when it's time to fill up (which is once every 4 to 6 weeks). In mixed driving, I'm lucky to get into the high teens. Highway driving can average in the mid to high 20's depending on speed and conditions.
My previous car was a 2006 Toyota Avalon V6 and it averaged about 4 to 5mpg higher in every driving condition.
I just accepted long ago that this V6 is a very thirsty engine and there's not much I can do about it. Now I'm looking at an MDX with the same engine so that'll be even worse. Luckily I can afford it so I don't really care.

That year and engine shows 21 as the combined mileage and 18 as the city driving. Keeping in mind that you aren’t showing any fault codes I’d be suspicious you are getting close to what is expected. Having said that we don’t know much about your driving habits so tell us about that. Of interest, do you drive to and from work and under 10 miles each way? Do you do that 5 days a week?

maybe you shouldn't buy a n/a big v6 and get a 1.8 civc, or something with a turbo. then you solved it. this car is smiles per gallon not miles per gallon bother.
