TL or Infiniti G37

I need advice here. If I trade my TSX in should I go with TL SH AWD or Infin G37. I like the ideal that the Infini G37 is rear wheel drive base. I've tested both over a month ago and will be testing again this weekend. I really like the look of the TL and want to stay with Acura-sale me on going with the TL SHAWD over the Infin G37 and why. Thanks.

It depends what kind of a car you want. Are you looking at the G37 Sedan or Coupe? Though I like the G37 Coupe a lot, its impractical for me at this stage in life. In my opinion the M37 is a better size comparison to the TL than the G37 sedan.

All I can say is that get the SH-AWD if getting the TL. I choose it for its handling and for 5 seats. Though most would agree that the middle seat in the back row is barely a full seat, specially in the SH-AWD as its more than 2'' elevated from its neighbors.

Good luck deciding !

I love the TSXSE, but I want something bigger or sits higher up. I came to the TSX from a Suzuki SUV.

It sounds like if you dont HAVE to have RWD, your definately leaning towards staying with ACURA.

The AWD is in my opinion alot more fun in the corners then rwd. better for winter driving too.

The TSX is an excellent car-I would just be more comfortable in a larger car I think. Just wondering which is the better built, more reliable car-Acura TL or Infiniti G37

Insightful first post! Going to take a beating trading a TSX SE! Why not get a Porsche Cayman Turbo.

A lot of us here came down to the exact two choices, including me. I'll tell you why I chose the TL: 1) liked the styling of the TL better and the interior a lot better; I thought the G looked a little down market inside; 2) liked the interior room and comfort of the TL; 3) engine/transmission of the TL was smoother, especially in 6MT configuration; 4) SH-AWD (enough said); and 5) RWD is a non-starter (literally) where I live for a few months a year.

Both good cars. Think about all the aspects that are most important to you. And most importantly, drive them both extensively and decide which one you like best.

I was in the same boat about 2 months ago. I was leaning more towards the Infiniti G37S sedan. I enjoyed the RWD, pretty powerful, fast, very sporty handling suspension, kick ass brakes and made in Japan vs. USA. Yet multiple test drives, later and I end up with 2012 TL 6 speed manual. It's subjective but the TL just felt right, maybe it's the SH-AWD system, maybe it's the roomy interior or the tech gadgets. I can't pin point it to a specific item but the TL just works.
Definitely consider your needs, wants and test drive both as much as you can.

The styling interior and exterior of the G37 turned me off. It's too rounded and the configuration of the buttons on the interior was weird. The Infiniti and the TL were the last 2 cars left when I was narrowing down my choices.

I don't have the AWD but I still liked the way the FWD TL drove better than the infiniti.
To me I don't like how the nose of RWD cars dip when you brake and how they point upwards when you accelerate. The TL stayed level during braking and accelerating and was very smooth and powerfiul. And the interior/exterior styling was more attractive to me.

Also I have owned two integras and two accords in my younger days and loved them all so I knew a honda engine would treat me good in the long haul.

Both are in my garage right now: 2012 BPRII TL w/tech which I bought in July, and a blue slate G37 Journey which my girlfriend and her brother leased three weeks after I bought my car. I've driven both extensively and here are my impressions/comparisons:
1. RWD and FWD are different beasts. The RWD does give you the feeling of more push, that "fun to drive" factor, but I prefer my TL for a daily driver. Actually I prefer it overall as the pedal feedback for my TL is more to my liking, it takes less of a depression of the pedal to really get it going.
2. I like the 6 speed gearing on the TL more than the 7 speed on the G. The gears feel "just right" on the TL, and rarely ever hunts. I feel that the G gear-hunts more, and I don't like the feel of second gear, it feels like the car is trying too hard for low speed, not much torque or speed there.
3. I like the cabin noise of the TL more (quieter).
4. The engine sound is also much quieter on the TL. We have stacked parking so we often go to the garage together if we have to swap cars. The sound between engines is markedly different, lower-pitched and quieter in the TL, higher pitched and louder on the G (both from the outside and within the cabin). At high acceleration from within the car, the TL sounds quieter and feels torquier (if that's even a word).
5. I like the feeling of the braking (from pedal depression) in my TL over the G. The G braking feels a little less responsive, or mushier.
6. I really like the electronic power steering in the TL over the traditional power steering of the G.
7. I also like the ride of the TL, it just feels more solid (likely because of the difference in chassis design and the wider stance of the car).

Keep in mind, I know this sounds very Pro-TL, but it's not just because I bought it. I test drove both heavily (and other cars) so for what I want, the TL was the winner. I can easily see why others may want the G, but it wasn't the ideal car for the way I drive and the ride quality that I like (luxury with a bit of sport; quiet interior without feeling disconnected from the road like a Cadillac).

And also my preferences of the TL are by small degrees. If the TL didn't exist I'd be more than happy with a G37. I enjoy driving their G every few days, but it did confirm that I made the right purchasing decision for me.

I was in the same boat two + years ago and ended up with the G37S Sedan.

For me the TL was a bit too large for what I needed in a daily driver. I couldn't get over the exterior looks (pre-MMC). I liked the interior and tech more in the TL, but in the end it just wasn't enough to sway me from my Infiniti.

Even today I wish I can drive my car more, hard to say that about many cars I've owned (mostly Honda/Acuras).

The TL is more focused on being well rounded and comfortable, the G37 compromises this for a 4 door sports car approach. Honestly, if FWD isn't a deal breaker, I'd shop the Maxima and new Altima if I were looking G37 right now - that design is long in the tooth.

^ it'll be out Summer to Fall 2013 for a new body style to debut as an all new '14 model. The top of the line G sedan is rumored to have a detuned GT-R engine ~400hp

Probably around the same time a new TL appears.

Despite my very pro-TL post above, I will say that the thinner G makes us all a little less paranoid when parking around Los Angeles. We don't have the biggest parking spots, and SUVs (because those are sorely needed to tame the Los Angeles wilderness) tend to cramp up even the larger spots. Parking my TL is a pain as I try to play the "avoid a ding in your door" game by making sure I have clearance on one or both sides. Much easier to accomplish in the G than the TL.

As stated, many of us ended with these 2 as the final contenders. I ended up with TL due to it being larger (G37 felt cramped in comparison - key point), much nicer interior (G37 looks dated and the screen needs to be updated yesterday), didn't like the engine sound, the seats are much more comfortable in TL. The exterior is also getting old now, and I just prefer the '12 TL. The ride in G37 felt better (sportier) than the FWD TL, which is why I went with the SH-AWD and that meets or beats the G, IMO.

I too went down this path and decided on the TL for a few reasons.

1. Manual Transmission with AWD, not an option on the G, required for the hill I live on in the winter
2. Comparing Auto to Auto, the 7sp on the Infiniti was maddening to drive, funky shift points
3. The interior reminded me much too much of a Murano I had not too long ago
4. Nissan/Infiniti resale values (which thanks to Acura's stupid rebate the new TL's have taken quite a hit lately)
5. Size, TL is just a tad bigger, and I have two car seats in the back, although I will say the low rear roof line makes getting the rear facing in at an angle, but nothing that's insurmountable.
6. Unique, I see a FTon of G sedan's around these parts, it's nice to have something a bit different
7. Stereo, hands down the ELS system is better then any other OEM options I've heard to date

If I was going to go with the G the list would have been
1. Straight line acceleration, although, I'm not sure how true this is
2. Looks, I do like the look of the G, especially in black
3. Audible of the engine, the VQ37 has a nice purr to it, toss on an aftermarket plenum and catback, but that personal preference.
4. Aftermarket support, seems as if there's a lot more support on the G side

Thank you everyone-I appreciate the advice and insight-and going to stay with Acura forever. If I can afford, will go up to the TL SH AWD. Acuras are addicting and look way better than Infinitis or Lexus.

The Infiniti to be honest with you is more fun to drive IMO. With this said, I went with the TL. The TL seemed quieter and the price was a few grand less for a used TL low mileage to that of the Infiniti G37 with similar mileage. Also, I liked the style of the TL better.

If this is for a new car, the thread should now be whether to get the TL or the Q50 or wait another year+ for the TLX.

Above 5500 rpm is where the G37 has more power. TL is more tractable in the 1st 4 gears at city speeds (combination of shorter gearing and more torque down low than Infiniti's DOHC 3.7). Check out C&D historical testing - 0-60 is same for both cars, Acura 5-60 time is quicker.

Disclaimer - that was MT vs MT. The 7AT in the G37 may make up for the lack of low-end grunt in the G37 compared to the 6AT of the Acura. Trade-off, from what I've seen is, if you want to enjoy the extra power in the high rpm range, your gas mileage will suffer greatly with the G37.

When I was shopping between the two in 2010, I went in biased toward the G37 S 6MT. After driving them, the TL felt more refined in addition to having more grunt at lower rpms.

I was in a similar position and spent many days reading this forum (and others).

I was looking for a AWD sedan that would be more of a road car (we have a Nissan Leaf for city driving.)

Overall, I felt more comfortable driving, riding and with the tech over the G37. And the big deal was the dealer willing to come down almost 15% (I believe this car had been on the lot for several months).

I just came back from a 800 mile three day family trip over winding country roads and loved the car. No regrets!

I bought my car 3 weeks ago, and i was on the SAME boat:
for me it was a flip between G37coupe vs TL. (both with tech).

but in the end, it came down to Cost of Ownership. the G37 was good, but for me the sedan was UGLY. the coupe was more of a sports car than the TL, but the TL (in my opinion) had more of a professional look.

not to mention the sedan is much bigger than a Coupe thus offering a bit more space for other things

TL was def. a good decision for me

I was concerned the g37 coupe trunk couldn't really handle a few sets of golf clubs and stuff, just too small. I liked the TL tech total package more than the Gsedan. FWD wasn't a detriment IMO because of the better efficiency/gas mileage, better interior and the more comfortable ride, more space...etc..

If I wanted pure speed and modability I'd have gone RWD G sedan. Didn't want RWD in new england winters although a winter tire setup prob would have worked just fine.

I personally think G sedans are hideous (the trunk looks like its taking a dump). so for me it was the G coupe or nothing.

The Coupe not only has less space than the TL, (which i can entertain 4 people comfortably ) it also cost more (less mpg + high insurance)

not to mention, the trunk was TINY. if i wanted to add a sub on it..i would have had no space to put even my groceries

I went through this recently. I was debating between these two cars and if people are still interested to buy one of these two, I can give them my opinion.

Acura TL SH-AWD
1. More tech
2. Bigger
3. Comfortable
4. Great resale value

G37 AWD
1. More powerful
2. Better handling
3. More prestigious

Both cars are great, but depends what do you want. I went with TL AWD. this is my opinion and I think TL is a better car overall, specially for a second hand one.

Thanks

G37 sucks a$$ in rear leg room, granted youre getting the 4dr since you're comparing it to the TL. I'm 6'1" and I can't even get my legs behind the drivers seat in a g37 when its set to how I drive, with a TL I was fine. So I bought a TL.
