Some questions on 2012 TL

If you look at the picture, my gas gauge is close to empty, but I haven't seen the gas light on yet. So first question, when do you see the gas light on your vehicle? Is this normal on the TL?

The reason I asked because I had problem with the TL gas tank before. My first fill up at the gas station, after the click noise from the gas pump, I removed the nozzle and immediately gas was flowing out of the tank (not the nozzle). I used the cap to stop the flow for about 4 seconds, then removed to check, it was still flowing out. So I tighten the gas cap, waited like 2 minutes and rechecked, everything was ok. I brought the car back to dealer, they couldn't find anything wrong with the car, told me the nozzle could be the problem. Next day I came back to the same spot in that gas station with my sister's car to check the nozzle, everything was fine. Weird!

Second question, I just realized that the sound from AC compressor is very loud. I always have my AC on in manual mode at lowest temperature, lowest fan setting (1 bar), then I could hear a loud noise from AC compressor kick in for around 4 seconds, then repeat every 12 seconds. When I'm driving with radio off, I could hear and feel that sound cycling at every stop side or red light. I sit in a BMW 328 and a Camry to check but their noise was definitely much lower and they don't run on a 12 seconds cycle like that.
So the question, is it normal for the AC to act like that in your TL?

I will bring the car to dealer next week. Already had an appointment to replace the door panel on driver's side. Leather trim came off where they meet with plastic part, they had to order a new panel.

For now I just want to check with you guys if what I described is normal. I do trust you guys more than dealer! My car is a basic TL with just 1k miles, 1 month old.

The light won't come on before the needle hits right at empty.

The loud noise you may be hearing is the cooling fans.. they are a littl eloud and come on intermittantly

When filling up gas, you'll need to stick the fill nozzle all the way in.

If you don't, you'll overfill the gas tank before the nozzle can click to stop.

I have never had gas come back out after filling. I never top it off either. Topping it off "could" possibly cause some back flow.

thanks guys. I never top off gas though, always get nozzle out after the click noise. Probably I didn't stick the nozzle all the way in.
yeah the gas light come on this morning after a short drive, range showed 41 at that time though.
AC sound was still loud, then after gas tank was filled to full, it was quieter. I will keep an eye on that.

I would suggest that you pop your hood with the engine running and listen for where the sound is coming from before taking the car. That way you can give a better description of the irritating sound.

The low fuel light in mine comes on around when the range left is shown to be around 39-40 miles.

I just got my 2012 TL Advance and have a couple of questions for anyone who can answer.
1. Do I need the Super high test gas or can I use the regular high test? I know I can not use regular....

2. Is there a way using the navigation I can speak an address to go to instead of typing it in? I can not figure out if this is possible.

What is your definition of "high test" and "super high test?"

In the gasoline industry, it is known as "regular" "midgrade" and "premium" Depending on your elevation and place in the US, the octane level varies.

You should always use premium 91+ octane fuel, ya cheap bastard. But if you don't, it's not going to blow up your engine necessarily.

Ditto the a/c cooling fan noise. TL seems to be much noiser than my other cars. Let us know what you find from dealer with that frequent kicking in-and-out.

Zuck, you might want to start a new thread with your questions...

Hey Zuck. Congrats on your new TL. I just got my second TL a couple of weeks ago and am loving every bit of it... Mine is not Advance though, but hey, its a TL, cant beat that. Now to your questions:

1. Yes you can use regular, but DO NOT use it. The car requires Octane rating of 91 or above. Regular is 87. You can get away with it once in a while, in case 91 is not available and you do not have any other option than to go with 87, but your engine will suffer. The performance will drop and so will the mpg. So, like the guys in Mythbuster will say, DONT DO IT!!.

2. You can use the Navi with voice command. I didnt use mine with voice command yet, have to read the manual, but check the "cheat sheet" that came with the car. Its pretty straight forward. Here is a link that should help you out:

Cheers and once again, congrats on your purchase and welcome to the one and only Acurazine....

Small update from the trip to dealer.

They replaced the door panel on driver's side where leather trip came off. Everything looks good and clean now, check picture 1 and 2. The passenger's side (last picture) still have a bump, I suspect it will do the same thing in future.

I sat in a new TSX and a different TL to check AC noise, they are loud, so I guess that's just how it is.

under9hell - noise is common as I had my 2012 TL for about 1 week with under 450 miles on it. the dual cooling fans in front of the radiator could be the culprit but then again I am not a trained mechanic. let me know what he dealership says as i will be keeping an eye out on mine as well!

yeah jiiglesia69. I sat in a new TSX and TL in dealer and they were loud, I guess it's just the way it is then.

Another question...
About a week ago I noticed that the steering wheel was making light squeaky noise when I get out of a parking lot. It was a cold night in Houston (around 50oF).
The noise didn't go away. Now, everytime I drive or backup slowly and turn steering wheel fast (like in a corner or getting the car out of garage), it makes the same noise. From searching I found out it could be power steering fluid, but the 2012 manual didn't show how to check that. I opened the hood anyway and found some big stain like in the picture, could it be something is leaking?

So the question is... how to check the power steering fluid for this car, and is it important to have it checked right away? Is it safe to keep driving for about a week? I don't have time to stop by dealership this week...
