Rattle/grind in driver rear wheel

This just started yesterday. I hear a "high pitched" rattle or grind coming from the drivers rear wheel on my '09 SH-AWD. Not sure what it is...hope it's not a bearing, but who knows. The car has 127K on it now.

Anyway, I say it is high pitched because it kind of sounds like someone rattling their keys. It happens more when I'm bearing right, or turning right at slower speeds. When I get to speed on the highway, it seems to stop.

I'm sure the car is in need of brakes, since it still has the originals on it (90% of 100K of the miles is highway), but it doesn't seem to make the noise when I'm braking.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Could be either of the two, but I would lean towards the brakes since they are the originals. I wouldn't even bother cutting the rotors, just get new ones.

Even though the sound doesn't happen when I brake, you still think it may be the brakes?

Jack up the car and spin the wheels or just take the wheels off and inspect. It's most likely the rear pads getting close to metal.

Bearing noise usually gets more prominent with higher speed.

Maybe I can do that this afternoon. I'm not the most handy. What should I look for?

Check if the brake pads are worn, especially the inside ones that cannot be seen from the outside of the car.

I didn't get to check it the other day, but the noise has mysteriously disappeared. I have not heard it once in the last two days.

Glad to hear it went away. I had a similar grinding noise on one wheel on my MDX and it turned out to be a rock stuck in the brakes. Construction near work... Luckily it went away by itself too, after we had it in reverse briefly if I recalled correctly.

Just to be safe, I would still check out the rear brakes.

I agree, play it safe. Take your car to a mechanic or tire/brake shop if you are not sure what to look for. Many of them do free inspections. The wear indicator on the brake pads can break off after a while... causing the noise to go away.

I had a bad front right bearing that made kind of a gravelly whine. That or brakes as mentioned
