Ran straight over a piece of tire on the highway...

I took my new TL on the highway for the first time today and while cruising at 120 KPH the car in front of me swerves to the left and reveals a piece of shredded tire smack in the middle of the lane. I couldn't get out of the way as there was traffic so I slowed down as much as I could. I ended up driving over it at around 75-80 KPH and it made a loud bang as it went by. The piece was a rectangle shape probably around 4-5 inches tall and 15 inches wide. I'm pretty sure it went right down the middle of the car.

Do you guys think that I should be worried about any undercarriage damage to the car? I took a look at it afterwards and there didn't appear to be any leaks/loose pieces but it was hard to see everything. Only thing is that it seems my steering is every so slightly off centre. When driving in a straight path the Acura emblem seems to point to the right just a tad. (although that could have been there before though as I never really looked too closely)

Pretty pissed about this as the car is less than a month old but I guess you never know what can happen.

Same thing happened to me, but it hit on the passenger side. I was behind the semi that through the carcass. I didn't have any time to move.

I thought everything was OK until I signaled to the right, and I got a fast flasher. It turned out the carcass took out the turn signal bulb and the fog light. $300 repair at my Honda dealer for a new turn signal lens and bulb, and a new fog light housing. They had to remove the bumper.

I have the mud guards and thought those would be damaged since I ran over it with both right side tires, but the dealer put it up on the rack and we inspected the undercarriage (they let me look too) and didn't find anything out of sorts. ~5000 miles later things still seem ok.

Tough car.

if it was just a piece of tire then you are fine.. bring your car in for alignment, it should fix the off center steering wheel issue.

or you can just bring it back to acura and tell them WTF my steering wheel is off centered, fix it for me.

i hit a large shredded tire which scratched up my front bumper, buffed it right off and looks like it never hit.. you should be fine

I ran over a deer Monday night, the car next to me hit it and sent it into my lane. Now there's a funny clunk noise from the rear right side of the car. Good thing it's a loaner.

Get it aligned and while its on the lift just ask tech to give the undercarriage a quick check. Doubt there is any damage but look over it won't hurt.

Same problem, retreads should be illegal! Dead center front, hit hard and bent up the front license plate holder and supporting air dam. I took a heat gun to the air dam (from behind) and was able to take out most of the distortion / dent so t hat it's hardly noticeable. Once I put a new front license plate holder on there I think it will be completely invisible.

Same thing happened to me. Put some black swirl marks on front bumper as well as damaged the right front turn signal lens (although it operates properly). Hope some touch-up paint will help with the swirl marks. I can live with the lens issue as it's not too noticeable unless looking at it close up.
