New owner of a 2013 TL SH-AWD + new member
Hi all,
I just bought my new to me 2013 2 weeks ago. It has a 22K on the clock. She is black with the brown saddle interior and has the tech package. I am loving the car so far. I found this site while looking up more info on the car. I gotta say the oil consumption thread scares me. So far no changes in oil levels. Were certain years more affected than others with oil consumption? What percentage of these cars seem to develop that issue?
I previously had a 2011 MDX and never had any issues.
thanks
mike

Hi, I have a 2012 TL SH-AWD and I have the oil consumption problem. It's never really consistent in the amount of oil burned per 1k miles. I originally discovered it when I hadn't checked my oil levels in a couple of weeks and I had somehow burned up about 3 quarts in around a little over 1k miles. I took it to the dealer and they gave me an oil change and started an oil consumption test. Came back 1k miles later... hardly any oil had been burned. Maybe a half qt. Then they gave me the whole "burning oil is normal" talk, saying if I noticed it burn more than 1.5 qt in 1k miles then to come back. Which was originally why I came in. I had burned almost 3 quarts in a little over 1k miles, about 3k miles into an oil change (maintenance minder said 40% oil life at the time). Decided to check the forums out. Saw a thread saying to use Lucas Upper Cylander Lucbricant so I thought to give it a try, and to my surprise it signifigantly impacted the amount of oil burned in between oil changes. Just poured a bottle in every few fill ups. Pretty much it has something to do with bad seals I believe and somehow it leads to carbon buildup in the engine. I'm assuming the more buildup, the faster it burns, and the lubricant basically flushes out the carbon and keeps the burning at bay. Just seems to be a temporary fix for a serious issue. Makes me question how long this engine will last regardless of what the dealer thinks.

Some 3.7s burn oil, some at a prodigious rate, and others burn not a drop. It's a piston ring sealing issue; the rings become carbon fouled and don't properly "scrape" the cylinder surface of oil, leaving oil behind in the combustion chamber. Most have reported that the rate of consumption is not linear -- it seems light at first then accelerates into the oil change cycle.
The good news is that Acura will take care of you if you have an excessive consumption issue. Check the TSB threads -- you have until September '19 to have it addressed at a dealer if you believe you have an excessive consumption problem, regardless of year/miles.
Congrats on the pickup. This aside, it's a fantastic car. And if you do have a problem, be sure to have Acura fix it for free.
