Question Moving from a 2G to a 4G - what to expect?

Let me start with a quick "thank you" to anyone who might have some insight on my question. I currently have a 2002 TL and have found a great deal on a 2009 TL with the Tech package. I know a lot has changed in 2 generations of TL's and I'm wondering what I should expect?

The problem is that the deal is about 5 hours from me and I haven't yet driven an 09 TL. My dealer/service dept. has given me loaner TSX's, but not a TL yet.

I've loved my 02. It has 150,000 miles on it and with the exception of a rebuilt transmission replacement, it's been a perfect car - never needed anything outside of routine maintenance.

But, the 09 looks sharp. So, from a driver's perspective, what should I expect? I assume this is well worth the upgrade? I've seen a few comments about the car feeling big - should that be a concern? I'm great with the size, but I don't want to feel like I'm driving something that's overweight or bulky.

I'm not excited about losing a few MPGs, but it is what it is. Anything else I should be aware of?

Thanks for your help!
Sean

I also came from the 2G TL-S crowd.

Firstly, the 4G TL is light years ahead in technology, luxury, equipment level, and handling (especially with the SH-AWD), than the 2G.

Lastly, no more worry about the "tranny from Hell" that can/will fail in any given moment, sometimes even without advance warnings.

Had a 02 TL-S with 226000 miles until September of last year when I bought my '12 TL Tech.

Here are the biggest differences I noticed:

1) Seats are way firmer, with a shorter seat length. At least it feels like its shorter.

2) Better visibility at night from the HIDs

3) Don't know if the '09s have electric steering, but that has been a noticeable difference for me.

4) Visor: No plastic extension, so sometimes my head gets a little warm

5) Smaller trunk. Way smaller trunk.

6) Although the 4G feels bulkier, my 2G felt longer.

That's just a few things. Don't get me wrong, I miss my 2G. 11 years and 226000 miles, you end up bonding with the car. But I really like my '12. Solid construction, decent gas mileage, good power, smooth but agile ride, better leather, great tech, etc.

And no transmission from hell. That's what really sucked on the 2G.

These are the two main reasons why I am keeping my 99TL as long as possible. The huge truck space is rare in todays' car as well the 2nd gen is longer making it a better looking car.

This.

Good luck OP... I test drove the SH-AWD and fell in love. But I made a financial decision to stick with my 3G for right now. It's a great car!

Thanks, guys! This is all helpful. I'll miss the trunk space and am a bit concerned about "bulky" feel compared to my 2G, but I'm excited about the car, the tech, the engine... everything - including no longer having to worry about my transmission!

Of course, within an hour of calling to make the deposit on the car, the stereo in my 02 died. My long time companion isn't happy about my decision... :-)

Sean, before you sell the 2G, please look under the passenger seat. Pretty sure I left my Slim Shady CD in your car.
