The manual says to use 5w-20, but with all of the oil consumption issues out there I have come across some suggestions that 5w-30 actually tends to work out better in these motors as far as it relates to preventing the oil burning.

Anyone find that to be true? Are you using 5w-30 or 5w-40 instead of the recommended 5w-20?

Anyone try this and found that the other oils cause problems?

Well...firstly...Do you have oil consumption? How bad is it?

5w30 will work fine. No reason it would cause any issue.

I use 0W40 or 0W20...whatever I end up buying (usually 0W40).

0W40 works in all the cars we own here, so its easy to just buy a buncha that. The cars we own call for anything from 0W20 to 10W30 in their owner's manuals.

I don't have oil consumption issues with my TL's J37 (or any of the cars I own). But...again...I just use 0Wwhatever is laying around and change the oil every like 6 to 8K miles.

I usually buy Castrol or Pennzoil.

*For me*, Mobil1 has burned off in a few different engines I've used it in.

How much oil does it consume?
I use 5W30 in J37(Moly or Pennzoil), zero oil consumption, change every 200 run hours or 30-40% oil life.
