Mileage on my 2012 about average?

One of the reasons I purchased my TL was for the solid gas mileage I was expecting. I drive mostly highway, about 80% and have around 7500 miles on my car. Right now, I'm averaging about 27.3 miles per gallon. I always due use premium gas as well and am not an agressive driver. usually cruise about 70-75 on average on freeway. These days people blow by me at 85! I know there have been a few posts, but do you think this is about right? Tips to improve? I feel it seems about right, but looking for a little more perhaps.
Thanks everyone.

I don't own a 4th gen, but one thing you should check (regardless of the car) if you haven't already, is make sure your tires are properly inflated - especially as temps drop.
With that being EPA Highway rating for the FWD model is 29 and AWD model is 26. So this puts you in the ball park and as I'm sure others will say - if you slow down your mileage will go up. Perhaps easier said than done, but it is the truth.

Yes that is about right. It averages 20 city/29 highway so you are a little below average on the freeway but I am thinking the 29 freeway corresponds to a slightly lower speed like 60mph. I think I am getting worse than you slightly because I am consistently at 80 mph on the freeway as the speed limit in 75mph.

There are folks that use cruise control a lot and they sat that it helps. What are tire pressures hovering around?

OP...Is yours AWD or FWD? I am getting on average 9.5-10 L/100KM when doing about 60% city and 40% highway. When I go on a trip and do only highway, the average is about 8.2 L/100KM and I have an AWD. Keep in mind that during the colder months, your fuel efficiency will go down too.

For the record....
8.2 L/100KM = ~29 mpg
9.5 L/100KM = ~25 mpg
10 L/100KM = ~23.5 mpg

I am FWD and my tire pressure is about 32-33. I suppose if I slow down just slightly, I'd bump up a bit to the 28-29MPG range. Don't want to appear to be complaining, just trying to maximize and pick everyone's brain a bit.
Thanks

Yep my tire pressures vary between 34-30 psi. If it cold, it is on the low end.

If your car is rated 20 city and 29 highway (FWD 2012 TL) then any driving away from the highway will lower your average from the highway number.

Plugging in 20% city on fueleconomy.gov gives your car an "average" of about 27mpg - dead on what you are getting.

Your gas mileage will also improve slightly once you've hit 10k miles or so and gas mileage will be higher in cooler weather.

I've had my TL for about 19 months. I keep a spreadsheet to track the mileage and I record every fill-up. I'm averaging 27.48 mpg with the same 80/20 hwy/city mix as the OP. Dealer service has told me to keep tires inflated to about 37 psi.

I was able to get 1 more mile per gallon on the freeway on my Audi last year but adjusting the tire pressure. It got cold and the pressure dropped. I was really surprised.

Thanks everyone.

I would be happy with those numbers. Once you get over 50 MPH the wind resistance is a huge drain on HP and MPG.

Finding the same thing out about my 2012 TL FWD wrt to tire pressure. I've been losing MPG recently and checked the TPMS to find that they'd dropped to 30psi (should have been 32). Simply filling more has already increased my MPG by at least 1mpg, maybe more like 2.

Man, i'm not sure how you guys get these kind of MPG numbers out of your TL. Am i the only one who thinks this car is a little harsh on the fuel? I don't baby my car, but i don't drive it hard either. I've got a 2012 AWD 6MT, shift at about the 3k RPM mark. Straight highway i will get about 25 MPG, straight City will be about 15 MPG. Average for mixed city & highway will give me about 19 MPG.

What's everbody secrete to get to the 27 MPG range?

^^ If you keep your 6MT to 60-65 mph on the highway, you'll pull 28-29 mpg, assuming normal amount of hills, wind, etc. and use of cruise control.

I also run climate control in auto mode, but I turn off the A/C except when it's really warm/muggy. If you run it in full auto mode the A/C will cycle on/off when it detects too much humidity in the car, even in cool ambient temps. That will give you a mpg hit.

Finally, of course, pay attention to tire pressure (especially when dropping temps can lower them 3-4 psi) and use premium fuel.

With a route that combines city/suburban/highway, at an average mph of 37, my 6MT is averaging 25.7 in summer, and a little lower (25.4-25.5) in winter. I have seen as high as 29 in extended freeway driving, per the conditions listed above.

I am in the same boat, a got a new 2012 SH-AWD in late August this year, have only 1500 miles on it and I usually get 15-18 MPG mostly city, part of it is very few hwy miles during regular commute.

Is my car still breaking in at 1500 miles ?

I dont know what you guys are doing differently. I drive 90% city and get 15mpg. Im not driving ultra aggressively either.

There's yer problem, chief. Also the 2012 TL has a 6th gear as opposed to the 5 in the 09-11 if you've got a slushbox like me, so that pumps up the average highway mileage up a bit. The more you have to get the car going from a dead stop, the worse your mpg will be. If I reeeally baby my car in the city and drive like a granny on her way to church I'll get like 22ish, and on pure highway I've gotten as much as 30 using cruise control the whole way. The 4G TL's a bit of a tank, so you don't really have to be a leadfoot to get under 20 mpg especially in the city. Mine's an 09 FWD btw.

It's good to see there are people who get MPG like me. I get around 15MPG mostly city driving in LA Downtown. My average speed per hour is about 16 so this is what kills my gas mileage. I wish I get above 18 in the city.

I was averaging 18.5 city in my '12 awd at 1500miles. Made a 500mile trip all highway avg about 24mpg.

After the trip I am avg 21-21.5 city

at about 2900miles I just got back from a trip to Orlando about 800 total miles. GF avg 25.4mpg going only 70-75 on the highway. On the way home I avg 24.3, but I cruise at 78-80 and accelerate significantly faster.

I would think your car is still breaking in, take a nice semi long trip and see if it helps break in the car some.

I don't expect to get greater than 21.5 in my city driving (30min trip...45mph the entire way from my house to work w/ many traffic lights), but I will let you know! Let me know if yours improves after another 1-1.5k more miles
