Keyfob discoloration

Hi Everyone. I have the tech package in my 2010 TL and have the push button start. My keyfob (silver part) has faded and looks really bad. Outside of buying a new remote and key, do I have any other options. I am sure I can find a shell for the remote but the silver on the key that gets inserted in the remote also has faded.

Any thoughts??

Yeah the silver paint will wear off pretty easy oon the fobs. I had some 3M carbon fiber dinoc stuff that I put on the sides and bottom of my fob. It took a while......and looks ok.
You can also use some touch up paint - then it will match the paint color of your TL

I have to say that for a car that runs 40K give or take I would expect that the key FOB have a better build quality than the stock FOB. KIA's have better looking key FOB's

Do what I did. I ordered a sample sheet of 3d carbon fiber and wrapped my FOB.

I got one of the ebay leather fob protectors and haven't thought about the fob since.

Granted, even though the listing had red stitching, the one I was shipped had white stitching, so if you go that route I'd send the seller a message first to confirm (if red's your thing)

The leather doesn't interfere with the car's ability to sense the key nearby (like when you want auto-unlock just by grasping the door handle, instead of pressing the unlock button) does it?

x2

Although it still leaves the corners vulnerable to the occasional concrete drop when you pull something like a cell phone out of your pocket. I just opened mine up for the first time in about a year and the buttons are perfect. The silver sides show a little wear, and the corners are missing a little paint but not as bad as it could look if left exposed. Absolutely no other issues though. I actually have my spare key, which has never even been used in one as well.

Just remove the little clip (unless you use it) and you are good to go.

It's too bad they don't make like Zagg Invisishield for key fobs

Seriously considering one of the leather ones after seeing the state of my friend's 2009 TSX key which has essentially lost all of its silver paint (and he doesn't drive more thank 3X a week).

The way I handle the occasional drop is I use the included clip to clip it to my belt loop. No co-mingling with keys, change or pocketed cell phones.

My ZDX -- same thing. The fob looks terrible. For a $55k car, one would expect a more durable key fob.

I just called Acura customer relations and complained. Maybe if enough of us do so, they will do something about it.

most manufactuers dont like to use paint on their keys.. if you realize.. they are all just black plastic.. where as acura actually has paint on their keys to make it more "stylish"..

i personally like how the key looks, but hate how they fade..

-OR- take your house/office keys off the TL keychain and put the fob in your pocket/purse. Its the best way to stop the wear and tear and it doesn't cost a penny.

If I remember right, the system will ask you to put the key in the slot if your foot isn't on the brake when you try to start it. Mine will ask me that from time to time as well.

The low battery alert is a bug in these cars. We all get that periodically. I was gettnig that warning a week after I bought mine new... that and the "Check fuel cap" message

Amen, quite annoying when you throw your keys on the table and it looks like shit next to the other brands keys... Land Rover, Lexus, Audi... We all know Acura is a good bang for the buck but come on now.

Love the idea, but the only problem I see is that you will have to do redo it if you change the battery.

I use a leather case and take advantage of keyless entry. The painted key is cheap. Hopefully they get it right nex gen. New MDX key looks better.

These versions of the smart fob keys have always worn quickly and prematurely. I have a few 2012 TL's that were used 1-year and all have either some or all of the silver worn off the edges of the fobs already.

Moving forward with new gen cars like the RLX and MDX, you see a much higher quality gob without smooth painted plastic and that feel heavier as well.

There really is no way to fix the current keys, outside of wrapping them with a protectant wrap or leather. They function fine but visually look poor, and all wear the same way.

New models:

Usually they can be but we would definitely need a answer about that from the Acura Dealer.

I will go check on Wednesday when I go pick up my 09 TL I just bought and give you guys an answer.

Didn't see this post the first time... look for universal screen protectors (same thing, just not laser-cut to the dimensions of a phone), then cut it down to size. I have no clue how modern non-keyless access cars work (since most cars I've driven either had keyless access, traditional toothed keys, or the European "entire keyfob into a receptacle" concept), but if it like the aforementioned Euro concept, be careful about it jamming in there or not even fitting.

I decided to wrap my key fob too, after reading this thread. Its called 3M Scotchprint Wrap Film Series 1080, Brushed Aluminum. I used a sample sheet because I have a few packets of samples.

I messed up on the bottom part where it detaches.
