I F@&$ED up my New Car!!!!

So, i'm really disapointed in myself. Stupid move from me, i would expect this from a teenager.
Saturday night, i decided to take a few friends out for a ride in my new car. It was foggy, below freezing, the road looked dry, but in reality i think it had some moisture on it. Well i entered a round about, and punched in while curving through. The car did not stick, is slid sideways, directly into the curb at about 70 km/h. Right front took the brunt of the hit. I have never seen a rim shatter like this. The spokes sperated from the rim, i was lucky i was able to stop befor the actual wheel fell off. Upon impact, the right rear also swang around and hit. Thought i could handle the repair bill without the insurance. I could've taken a $2500 hit, but the estimater is already ad $4K in damages. The good thing about it though, is that there is absolutley not Frame or Subfram damage. No damage to the body of the car at all except for the front Mud Guard. It's a hard lesson to learn, our cars may have the SH-AWD emblem on the back, but they are not Invincible.

Yea, everyone was ok. Just a little shaken up. I guess it could have been worse, like imagine there was no curb??

sorry but glad you are ok. Icy or black ice roads are bad even with awd vehicles. On my drive from NJ to NC on Sunday I passed numerous warning signs-icy roads or black ice-slow down

I've made a similar mistake, a collision like that wreaks havoc on the steering and suspension make sure that is all checked out.

No damage to the car at all. Except for the front mud guard was scraped. I didn't get a chance to take a pic with the spare wheel on, but ya, thankfully no body damage at all.

And i agree....no showing off unless P###Y involved! lol

Sorry about your car

Are you having the car repaired at an Acura dealer? I've never seen a wheel break like that. Whoever is repairing the damage for you, I would make sure they take a really good look at all things connected to the suspension cause you could have some other headaches pop up after the repairs are done.

btw, are you sure your suspension parts are not bent? with a hit like that to completely break the wheel off there has got to be some type of damage to the alignment.

i wouldn't be surprised later that your car wont drive straight..

remember, its a 4000lb car running into a curb at 70km.. there should be more damage than just your broken rim.

I can guarantee you have some suspension/ K-frame damage as well. If you smack a wheel that hard on any Honda vehicle, it is all but certain the K-frame shifted, control arms are bent, hub/spindle could be bent. I know they will, but make sure they do a 4 wheel alignment when they are done. I've been an auto insurance adjuster for years and seen this type of thing before many times.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. The car is at the prefferred shop for my Insurance company. I know, there is suspension damage, and other items. Hence is why he's at $4k so far. He did mention that the spindels for both wheels need to be changed, ball joint, tie rods, calliper, etc. The list goes on. This shop if a very good shop, rated number 1 in this area. He assured me that the Frame and SubFrame is not bent. I'm waiting to get the written estimate e-mailed to me. I'll keep you posted.

JNC: I have to admit, that poster is incredible. I couldn't help not to laugh.......that's pretty good.

That SH-AWD emblem is very good at inspiring trouble. Last winter I had an off road excursion in which I saw my car approaching a guard rail in an uncontrollable slide. Felt the car jump a hump (all 4 wheels off the ground) but luckily got out of it all with just a red face. Definitely learned my lesson!!!

umm.. you do know that it is almost impossible to eyeball a bent or twisted frame.

mechanics will say almost anything to get your business.

the real test is when its finished and if it drives straight, then your all in the clear.. but if it pulls to any side.. then your pretty much fucked..

from what i am seeing, your car wont ever drive the same again, judging from the wheel pic.. (which btw is a strong solid 5 spokes, probably forged wheel)

I know you can't eyball frame damage. I know that i am screwed if the car pulls. Let's hope that's not the case. When i took the car in, they kept it for 4 hours. They had it hooked up on the machine or whatever they use. All i can do at this point is trust that they will do a good job. Besides, my insurance company guarantees the work they do for as long as i own the car. So if it's not driving straight, and if they can't fix it, it could become an insurance replacement issue.

UPDATE:

Ok, so i got the estimate from the shop: Here is the List of items:

- 2 new rims
- Rt Frnt Wheel Hub
- Rt Frnt inner
- Rt Front rotor
- Rt Front Caliper
- Knuckle, Steering Rt
- Upper Control Arm Rt
- Lower Control Arm, Rt
- Outer Tie Rod End R/F
- Knuckle, Rear Suspension RT
- Rear Wheel RT Hub
- 2 Wheel Pressure Sensors
- Mud Guard R/F
- Front Susp Fork R/F
- Further Diagnose Suspension
- Dealer for Code Resets (VSA & TPMS)
- Four Wheel Alignment.

They also had a number of bolts, and clips, retaining rings etc. listed.

Don't feel bad. I've been in that same situation myself, only it was in my parent's Caddy. Whoops, sorry Mom. Tat black ice is invisible.

If anything in the unibody or K-frame is still out of spec after they replace the suspension parts, the car will not be able to be properly aligned. Be sure to ask the shop for a copy of the alignment print out, that will tell you what you need to know.

No way the OEM wheels are forged. They would be WAY too expensive for the car. They are likely just cast wheels. I believe Acura uses Enkei for their wheels.

the broken wheel absorbed good impact from the curb obviously. it's amazing when looking at the way it broke, not crack at the rim but the center...

Glad it turned out relatively OK (no one hurt). This is a good lesson for all of us. The AWD system can lure you into a feeling that the car is invincible, it tracks so well. But once those tire contact patches lose traction, none of it matters.

we will see what happens.

i have known some people in similar accidents that only show sign if bent suspension components, busted wheel, but ended up with bent frame in areas where the suspension parts are connected. Car ended up with many alignment issues that couldn't be corrected due to extent of damage. Keep in mind that these were dealer repaired.
