Talking How to Properly Paint a 4G TL Grille *WORKLOG* Step-by-Step

Hey Guys,

Some of you may know me from around the net, only as Nexson. "The custom work god" ya ya ya Anyways my name is Brian and I wanted to show you all how a grille is suppose to be painted in case you are wondering why they cost so much or why they they pit so easily (if not done correctly).

Anyways, I have not started on it yet but I did get the grille in the mail. I scored a true beauty @ $75 shipped, it is perfect. This will be for my car, and it will be painted Basque Red Pearl. I picked up the basecoat, which cost me $40 for just 4oz!

Anyways, this will be a step by step process, so sit back, check the thread often and enjoy!

So today I made time to get the front part of the grille painted. Both parts have been primed, but now I present to you all the pictures of the top part and its process. I hope that most of the pictures do the talking, but please ask questions if your stumped.

I will follow up with the bottom half in the following days.

Also, the paint booth folds up and stores away, I have pictures if anyone is intrerested.

Nice job. Did you paint just the beak or the surround as well?

Is it a bitch to take the whole grill off?

Amazing job! I wish I had the skills, tools and gravitas to mess with my grill! But for $75, that was a steal! Would you mind listing all the materials used and total cost?

Thanks for sharing. The craftmanship is superb and your results speak for themselves. Very nicely done.

Please post the finished grill mounted on your car when you complete the project. Should look great.

Thank you for the compliments everyone.

The products used are all shown in the pictures, they get pricey though, if one was to go and buy all the products to do a grille, it would get expensive fast.

It is best to have a shop do the work, that knows what they are doing

it's just one of many. I filled in the gaps, I'll send it out to the customer on Monday.

As for this grille, look for an update next weekend, as I am a school teacher and have time to work on the weekends

Night and day difference. BRP is a really nice color. Do you plan on painting the rear trim piece too?

And mods...this should be a DIY.

wow nicely done!

you should throw in an estimated drying time for each major step and maybe a few comments here and there to make this a real proper DIY. great work!

Here's the thing, all products have different drying times, I use a fast drying clear to elminate trash falling into my clear, plus I don't need my clear to stay open very long either. This thread is more of a "How your grille should be painted" if you get it painted by your shop. Not really a DIY, because if one were to buy the materials and equipment to do the job, it would be 100x the cost of getting the grille painted at the shop.

I will be honest, the big fat grille doesn't bother me like it use too either.

I am going to leave the rear, I like how it breaks up the rear of the car.

First off I have to compliment your work, it looks great. I have a question though that I'm guessing you could answer. I have a CBP and I'm interested in getting my grille and rear trim painted as well. I had an idea to paint the inner piece of the grille where the emblem is the same as the car body, but paint the surrounding piece of the grille and rear trim piece a flat or matte black. Is that more difficult/too much work? More costly as far as the paint and effort goes? I think adding the flat black in areas would sort of keep some of the integrity and flow of those trim pieces as far as the visual effect goes, especially in the back.

Thanks for the compliments!

If you don't mind that I give my opinion first. The flat black and the gloss black is a nice color combination, however with the essential classyness of the 4g TL, it begs for anything but "flat colors." I think adding flat black to a 4G would degrade(cheapen) it just a bit, howevever this is just my opinion, I only have been Modding for 5 years now (not forever), so that is just my 02.

As for extra work, it is not extra work, it is just extra money. That flat black requires a flat clear. You wouldn't be able to just spray basecoat and leave it because it would have no protection. It would require a clear that dries flat, this allowing proection. So no extra work, just extra $ since typical body shops do not stock this type of clear, however I could be wrong, they may stock it for certain situations.
