Gas Milage after modifications

I typically drive 70-75 mph and about 50% on cruise control. I do from time to time enjoy spirited driving but that is not a daily experience as I have no interest in feeding the local police department and court system cofers by speeding excessively. I invested about $1,500 with my modifications as noted in my signature, and have measurable results that are worth updating you on.

In stock form I saw the following in normal driving:

20.8 city and 24.6 highway

After installing the modifications:

22.9 city and 28.4 highway

There are normal variations to all milage numbers, but in general this is my experience. I use Shell 93 Octane gas and Valvoline Synthetic Oil too. Cold tire pressures are set at 36 psi. I expect my investment will have a ROI in three years, then it will save me about $550 per year there after.

I hope my observations are useful.

Hey potmilkz, we get very hot summers here. And yes a/c kills gas mileage, I was getting about 20 mpg highway driving with a/c on, I can hear the piggy bank emptying as I'm driving!

The highest milage was achieved without A/C. With A/C took off about 1mpg

im sure the heat difference in cali is way different than what you have in ny..

keep in mind.. were near the equator and we do not get snow at all so its hot for months and months.. oh btw, its rated 106 degrees tomorrow in socal.

Also don't forget the humidity. It's been hot too, but thats the usual. Weather's been really nice an cool after Lee went through. BTW OP how'd you manage that increase? I'm surprised you haven't floored it a bit more than usual.

Oh trust me I have gunned it plenty, and enjoyed every bit of it. I'm not 20, and I have a family and very good job, so tangling with the authorities is not on the menu. For the most part, traffic patterns don't permit extended high speed runs in the area, and racing from light to light I did 20 years ago. I paid for these mods primarily for the gas milage reasons, but the performance upgrades are a plus. My ride has real "get up and boogie" now and when I hit it, it sounds great too.

I'm confused at to where some of you are getting your highway mileages. Is that still a mix of highway, or are those figures JUST highway? Anyone not getting over 26 on the highway has something wrong to begin with.

I have an 11 which is a 5-speed and has worse gas milage in stock form than your 12 which has a 6-Speed. Also in the New York, northern New Jersey, Conneticut region, there are hills and traffic that in the best of times does not permit the same kind of cruising one would see in Florida or Texas. I would expect that overall gas milage, even with A/C on would be generally better than that in hilly or urban areas of the US. Just a thought.

I still am surprised. The difference on the 2012 SH-AWD version with the six speed is only 1mpg. I easily get 28 on mine on the highway (which is 2mpg better than it's rating). But again, I'm talking about just highway cruising - that is not mix of stop and go driving at all.

I think that driving conditions are more meaningful to producing average milage results. The best milage I have seen was on pool table flat areas. Maybe that is what it is like in your area? It could explain for your better than average results? We are not driving a hybrid so anything less than 35-40 mpg is nothing to get excited about anyway.

I agree. The running average on my 6MT (2010) is at 25.3 right now with about an even split b/t highway and stop and go driving. In pure highway driving, 28MPG is pretty common. But throw in some in-city, stop and go with the A/C running, and the MPGs drop pretty quickly. Not bad, IMHO, for a 3800 pound, AWD car with a big motor.

Altegris,
How much did all the mods set you back?
Sounds good.

Dude NY sees air temps of 90 degrees and higher often in the summer and over 100 degrees occassionally. NY also ALWAYS has high humidity so feel like temperatures are very often over 100 degrees. They know what heat is, that I can assure you.

SoCal is @ Latitude: 32° 30' N. That is a long way from the equator. The US has seen 100+ temps in almost every state this year, so I think making an arguement that SoCal is hotter and thus harder on A/C systems for cars may be a little out there. From what I understand, 90 and very humid is harder on the system than 110 and desert dry air. The only exception would be Death Valley where they have recorded the hottest temp ever in the US @ 134. Just my .

Clearly anytime we turn on the A/C it will negatively affect gas milage.

I'm in Philly and since last fillup, I am getting a COMBINED 18MPG...with 50% city with a 2010 AWD 6 spd

I don't know, man...I was careful with my break-in period...I start out REAL slow from a stop light pissing off everyone behind me...

This morning the computer is displaying 30.3 mpg. Will check the math on next fill up, hoping to get ~550 miles out of this tank.

So, I filled up tonight. Here's the numbers:

Miles on this tank- 492.2
Computer miles left till empty- 26
Fuel held- 16.198
Computer MPG- 30.2
Actual math MPG- 30.38

forgot to check computer avg speed. I usually cruise between 50-60 interstate and highway. Wife complains because I drive like grandpaw. But she never got these numbers. Leadfoot...

I think i posted my experience here somewhere..but when I drove from LAX to Vegas with the ATLP prototype CB exhaust..I was getting roughly 28-28.7 avg and even hitting 29 mpg..with full baggage in the trunk and a total of 4 people in the car including myself

Then again, I do have the 6 MT..may or may not make a difference if you think about that weight and all..just my .02 but eh

But awesome numbers nonetheless OP

Cool. At first, I didn't think the car was capable of more than about 28, but as mine has become broken in and the mileage continues to increase, I'm revisiting that. Your experience shows that 30 mpg is within range with the 6MT.

Hard to complain about a car that goes 0-60 in 5.2 and can get 30 mpg on the freeway.
