Folding Mirrors Car Wash

Recently I went thru an electronic car wash and when jumping on the highway I seen that my passenger side mirror was pushed in. I didn’t hear any noise and when I drove off the mirror was fine until I got on the highway. Are we supposed to fold the mirrors in at car washes? I never done this before on my Maxima.

There’s no damage to the painted portion or glass. The mirror functions fine. This is a photo before I pushed it back in place.

Lots of vehicles have mirrors that don't fold at all. So I don't think you are supposed to fold them.

Yeah my Civic had non folding mirrors. Lol Was reading from a Mercedes forums and they all stated they folded them in before getting in the car wash. I guess the wind and water all over the car since there car wash wasn’t operating properly with the blower system must’ve push the mirror back like that. Scared the crap out of me I thought I hit something or someone hit me.

almost all modern cars have foldable mirrors!
it's fairly easy to fold, a bump from my shoulder will fold them.

Lol I guess the wind did blow it. The driver side slides in more easily than the passenger which is stiff.

Ha! I didn't know our mirrors folded. I never had a reason to try to fold them.

the wind didn't fold it. Impossible. Unless there is something broken inside the mirror. While Justin is right about them being easy to fold, I've never seen a mirror fold in on it's own, even at 120mph. Someone must've bumped it at some point, for whatever reason. I mean, they're easy enough to fold in, but you still got to give it a decent nudge. Otherwise guys at the race track would be trying to find ways to keep their mirrors from folding in on them.

Also, my 1999 Civic SiR didn't have foldable mirrors  Though my 1992 Civic Si did. Likely just budget cuts/cost savings or something, back in 1999. But Justin is right again... these days, I think pretty much 99.8% of cars have foldable mirrors. It's more of a safety thing in case someone did clip their own mirror... by folding, they're likely saving themselves from having to buy a whole new mirror assembly.

Must’ve been the car wash then. The brushes must’ve rubbed against the mirror. It wasn’t fully pushed in but partially. I do recall that day the car wash was malfunctioning and I was stuck at the end of the track so I had to give the car a little gas to get out before the guy behind me rear ended my car.

I can see the carwash brushes doing it. By the way, don't use those carwashes!! They destroy your paint! :run:

I’m sure if my car was black it would be a nightmare of swirls. I don’t have access to water like that were I live. We have hand wash spots but they end up doing more damage than the car wash I’m talking scratches. Touchless is another option but the recycled water makes me wonder.

Today I tried for the first time to fold the mirrors. I pushed on it but it didn't want to move, even though the part of the mirror assembly that attaches to the car, slightly forward of the main mirror body, was moving slightly away from the car. Seemed like I would break it off the car if I pushed any harder. It didn't want to fold at the circular part right behind the part that holds the glass, where it seems like it should fold. Same for both mirrors. Are they stuck, or is there some trick to getting them to fold?

That’s normal just push harder. It won’t break at all. My driver side mirror is stiff like that while my passenger sides pushes in easily.
