First person at dealer to identify Sport mode problem...
I really enjoy my 2010 AWD TL...think the suspension is oversprung and underdamped...but that's besides the point.
I've noticed that Sport mode doesn't match the owners manual. The manual says that "D" employs gears 1-5 and that "S" uses gears 1-4. But I've never been able to get my TL to automatically shift into 4 in sport mode. I can always paddle shift into 4th, but then I'm out of the automatic mode and have to paddle shift forevermore. So I'm at the dealer today and finally remember to mention it. We found the page in the manual talking about 1-4, and we test drive my car and it only shifts 1-3. The dealership found another 2010 TL and it too shifts only 1-3 in sport mode. So after 6 years on the market, I'm the first guy to notice this? You've got to be kidding me. I must have missed threads on this.
Has anyone else explored this or experienced this?
Thanks,
David

Also, some years (09-11) are 5AT and 12-14 are 6AT.
I can 100% promise you my 6AT 2013 goes from 1 through 5 and doesn't shift up to 6.

That's odd, my 2012 6AT will go as far as 4th in auto sport mode, and will not go to 5th without a pull on the (+) paddle (at which point it is stuck in manual sport mode) until putting the shifter to (D).
While driving in (D) if I shift the gear selector to (S) it depends on the speed at which I am travelling whether the trans shifts down to 5th or 4th.

TSX Wagon here. My manual says the same thing -- that sequential (sport) mode uses gears 1 thru 4, but with a note that 4th gear is used only at high speed. When driving on the highway, I noticed it only used gears 1 thru 3. Evidently, I wasn't going fast enough to use 4th gear.
I like manual mode, and don't mind shifting for myself. It's also handy for engine braking.

Drifting
In the case of the 5 speed Auto, push it hard enough and it will go to 4th in Sports mode, I dislike doing this as it stays at high RPM in 3rd gear for too long Imo.
I prefer to use the paddle in Manual mode and shift to my liking.

It should go from 6 (Drive) down to 5 (Sport), then if you press a paddle should go to whatever gear you're in (like 5) and then you go up/down from there. Mine, on highway, definitely rides in 5th

I did some playing with this the other day on my commute, from a stoplight at the start of the freeway entrance put the car in (S) and it went through the gears until 4th and stayed there(ran it upto 5500rpm)and didn't go to 5th. then while cruising at highway speeds in (D @ 6th gear) moved the shifter to (S) at various speeds for experimental purposes. What i found is that shifting from (D) into (S) at speeds 60mph or greater the trans shifts to 5th only, and if i was travelling less than 60mph the same shift from (D @ 6th gear) to (S) would drop directly to 4th. all of this was done while trying to put very little inputs into the accelerator pedal because at highway speeds in (D) if you get on the gas it will induce a 6-5th downshift, then a shift to (S) will end you up in 4th all the same
