Feeling The Squeeze: Audi Drops Le Mans Series Racing Program
December 5, 2008 06:10 AM
by Carlos Lago
After years of dominating the series, Audi announced today it will not pursue a Le Mans Series campaign in 2009. According to Audi motorsports head Wolfgang Ullrich, who spoke to Autosport, the decision was made to cut expenses.
"We will not participate in the LMS," he said. "We all have to face that the economy is moving and everyone has to put something into their pocket to save money.”
Audi will still race it's new R15 in the 24 Hours of Le Mans race in June, as well as the American Le Mans Series inagural 2009 race -- the 12 Hours of Sebring in March. And though the LMS campaign has been scraped, a run in ALMS “is still on the table,” Ullrich said.
Despite the pullout, you can expect to see Audi’s at various racing series in the form of the recently announced R8 GT3. Revealed at the Essen Motor Show early this month, the €262,000 turn-key racer should be in the hands of racing teams before the 2009 motorsports season begins.
