Exactly 2 years ago today...

I bought my 2012 TL FWD CBP with Black Interior.

I have 43000 miles on it, and I still love it. Great car so far. Been very reliable with hardly any maintenance needed. And despite the negativity towards its looks, I get complimented on it regularly.

I'm really wanting to keep this car for a long time, and get a second car for fun (2014 Corvette Stingray maybe ). As long as it remains reliable and continues to give me good gas mileage, I think its a keeper. I still wish my local dealer didn't suck so bad, but its good thing I can take it to Honda and get it serviced for less.

BTW, So far I've been sticking to the maintenance schedule the car has been telling me to do. Basically oil and oil filter changes, tire rotations, and engine air and in cabin air filter changes. When should I expect to do the tranny fluid and should I do look into doing any other service (brake fluid? Brake pads? headlight fluid? )

Yup, same here. Despite all the gloom and doom you hear about the 4G TL's exterior on the internet and here on AZ esp on CarTalk, I as well, to this date, am still getting positive compliments on the car as well. I never had that with my TSX.

Despite me never being a Corvette fan, the 2014 Corvette Stingray has also caught me eye, considering its power, new exterior/interior, and relatively low cost. Given my interests in getting a 911, the Stingray bears very close scrutiny.

Re: maintenance, just follow your MID; the maintenance schedule booklet that came with the TL gives you recommendation on the other stuff you mentioned about. Keep in mind no major service is needed until 105k miles.

I know what you mean about the Vette. I want something fun, but everything I want is either too expensive or I'd have to get an older, high mileage one to fit the budget. Vette fits the bill at a great cost. I might consider it next year when they'll be easier to get.

And good to hear about the service. I like not having to spend a lot on my car

Congrats Slick!

Doc, I too am considering a 2014 Stingray as a 2nd car. I'll be keeping my Type S. I've always had an appreciation for Corvettes, just not enough to buy one. Well the C7's have caught my eye too. I have a short list of cars I'm considering.....

1. Porsche Cayman S
2. Jaguar F-Type
3. Maserati Gran Turismo
4. Aston Martin V8 Vantage

All things considered, when I saw the new Stingray, I immediately thought it looked VERY close to the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta. I play hockey with a guy who is the New Car Sales Manager for Hendrick Chevrolet here in Kansas City. He says he'll have cars on the ground September 1st. I want to see these with my own 2 eyes. But everything I've read, seen and watched just sings the praises of the new Corvette.

Those are some nice vehicles there

The Cayman is a great choice; I haven't test driven it yet, but I heard it's so well designed it gives the 911 a run for its money. I'll have to check out the Cayman and Boxster as well. But like the OP, the 911tt is too much $$ for me to spend new, so I'm looking at used 996tt/997.

Now that I have derailed the OP's thread... these 2nd cars are likely going to have much higher maintenance and repair costs, MUCH more than the TL. Something we need to consider as we deal with our life crisis.

it's hard to beat the sound of the Porsche motor... I had a boxster for a couple years and can vouch for how much fun those mid engined cars are.. AND for how $$ they are to maintain!!

"the cheapest Porsche to buy will be the most expensive to maintain"....

buy the most expensive - i.e. newest - one you can! preferably new or CPO!!! I personally think the new boxster is so cool looking.... mine was nice looking but i always felt hte boxster was a little "soft" looking..the new one looks like alittle carrera GT!!

and to the OP original topic - I too love my TL..and plan to keep it a while. A TL as a daily driver and a fun car like a Porsche or Vette as a 2nd car would be sweet!!!

consider a used low mileage 911 Twin Turbo. the Turbos are so fast it's insane.... not as tossable as a cayman or Boxster...but talk about a sweet car!! you can get nice ones for about $50-60k

My problem is the wifey can't drive stick; since my TL is a 6MT and I'm adamant the 2nd mid life crisis car (be it the Porsche, Vette, etc) HAS to be a stick, I'm at a quandary where she can't drive either vehicle and she refuses to learn stick. I could trade in the TL for a RDX, but I don't want to take a loss on a trade in.

I test drove a 2004 996tt. The Turbo was, like you said, absolutely INSANE with that 2nd gear pull. It had 63k miles with a monstrous exhaust and stealership was asking $55k. Just concerned about the maintenance costs....

One thing I really like about the TL is that the 6MT performance is at 335/S4 level while maintenance costs are low. Despite what some posters here on AZ will suggest, my research shows that to get a vehicle with even higher performance associated with Bavarian makes (ie. 911 level) maintenance costs generally rise exponentially, and sometimes painfully so
