Emergency Shutoff?

just wondering.. how do you shut off the engine for keyless ignition systems in an emergency if the car is in motion? specifically for TL's?

i've tried pushing the start button, but it didnt turn off.
i held it for a bit, and nothing happened either.
(both were done while the car was moving to simulate an actual emergency)

im just wondering for safety reasons.

im pretty sure it can be done while in drive, just cant be turned back on in drive. i think if you press the start/stop button twice rapidly it will shut the engine off but keep all of the electronics on.

would make best sence, since they do not want to just accidently hit it, and have the car be off

and for the OP, an owner's manual would more then likely mention it in there (and if you don't have it, it is available online also for free too)

Doesn't the Owners Manual tell you?

Maybe he's wondering because he has a TL non-Tech model? Anyway, on page 186 of the 2010 TL Owner's Manual there are two ways to stop the engine even while driving. (1) Press and hold the engine start/stop button for 3 seconds, or (2) Firmly press the engine start/stop button button 3 times. Either way, the power mode goes from ON to ACCESSORY or VEHICLE OFF (LOCK) but the steering wheel will NOT lock.

just flip the car in neutral - why the hell would you want to turn it off?
if you do you will lose power steering and brakes

i thankfully, have NEVER had to do an emergency shutoff while the car was moving. But the prob is with these newer cars is that they're all by wire. Even though im a total tech geek, im weary of electronics for this kinda stuff. call me oldschool, but i prefer my throttle cable. lol

that's exactly it.
has anybody listened to the 911 call? it gave me goosebumps, scary stuff. BUT, i will say that it doesn't sound like the guy tried to pop the car into N, which is weird cause he was a cop....

I have a 2010 AWD-SH Tech. Thanks for the reference! It's good to know regardless of whether or not i need it. IMO, knowing how ur car reacts in adverse situations is pretty damn important. Call me paranoid if you want. But i'd rather know this stuff, than to find out the hard way.

if anybody tries it, please do post and let me know if it works!

Yep, that's a really good point and that should be everybody's first instinct if ur throttle goes ape crazy on you. I was just asking emergency shutoff out of curiosity, in case for some freak reason i need to shut the car off.

does anybody know if the auto-tragic shifter is by wire as well? shouldn't be right??

Actually, can anyone confirm if you lose power steering with the engine off? The power steering on the TL is supposed to be electric now, so there's no engine-driven pump and theoretically it could run off the battery?

I can't confirm or deny it, but I'd assume it wouldn't work because when you put the car into ACC mode, there is no power steering. But so long as the car is moving and the steering wheel isn't locked, it's not difficult to steer it to the side of the road.

Back in 04, I was riding in my dad's business partner's brand-new 745i when it completely shut off in the middle of a 3-lane freeway here in Indy (due to some electrical glitch). Incredibly terrifying, but it was still able to be steered to the side of the road with no power steering. He returned the car to the dealer the same week.
