CVT Vs 6 Speed Automatic

I was hanging out on Maxima Org and brought up a debate. A user stated that the 6 speed transmission in the 4G Acura TL is inferior to the CVT in the Maxima. What do you guys think of this?

The TL is a heavy car without much low-emd torque...

In the end, the Max is not as good of a car.

True statement! You know what's funny is the Maxima has no high end torque so its the opposite of the TL.

It sounds like it drives like an old OHV American engine.

Lol Especially mated to a CVT. The engine is a DOHC 3.5 V6 putting out 255 Hp and 252lb ft of torque weighing at 3,579 lbs. I never understood the love for CVT transmission.

To my warped engineer's mind, CVTs are an answer to a question nobody every asked.

Why is this in Ramblings instead of a TL model forum or Car Talk?

OP .... where do you want it moved to?

My mistake guys. Thought it was a bit off topic since I was referring to another forum. The 4G TL section is fine.

I think CVTs suck, plain and simple. As much disdain as I hold for automatic transmissions, CVTs are even worse.

Lol Exactly what my thought process was when I was telling the guys on the Maxima.org forum why does Nissan put CVTs in the Maxima which is a 4DSC yet put Automatics and Manuals in the Infinitis? Instead a user said the 6 speed in the 4G TL was inferior to the CVT in the Maxima.

Whatever idiot said that is, well, an idiot. Relative to the 4GTL and the Mazima, the TL's 6MT > than the TL's 6AT > than the Maxima's CVT.

My thoughts exactly! I had a 4th Gen Nissan Maxima so I will always have love for the Max. But driving my fiance's Maxima with CVT takes away the joy of what the Maxima used to be.

TL all the way if comparing to Maxima...

ANY car you pick will have Pros and Cons... but to compare these two - not even a fair comparison... don't trash down TL to Maxima (Nissan) level... Nissan's are horrible... in the past Nissan was better than Mazda in general speaking, but as of lately I think Mazda is passing them by too...

If anything then compare Acura's with Lexus... Lexus will be more lux, but as far as engine performance, those two brands are great to compare...

True. Nissan was good in the early 80's up until the 2000's. Now all they make is crap cause of their alliance with Renault. Funny you mention Mazda, I remember when they were having issues in reliability when Ford had a partnership with them. But lately I can see how they are moving towards quality vehicles since they now make their vehicles in Japan and have no ties to Ford. The new Mazda 6 has a 2.5 turbo was crazy amounts of torque.

Ford was a mixed blessing for Mazda (and vice-versa); in the end I believe both companies are better off flying solo as their design philosophies are markedly different. That said, my 2009 Mazda3 i Touring Value Edition with the (more or less) Ford 2.0 engine was, inexpensive, a blast to drive, and very reliable. When I bought the car I was shopping for A) inexpensive transportation for a long daily commute, and B) for a car with a manual transmission destine to become my son's first car, so I wasn't looking for any real upgrades of any kind (didn't even get it with a sunroof). My sales person tried to sell me a 2.3 liter engined 2008 Mazda s Sport for the same price; so glad I passed as those engines have proven to be pretty reliable right up until they go Tango Uniform with no advance warning. That said, swapping in a Ford Duratec 2.5 from a Focus is a pretty easy job on the 2.3 liter cars and yields a car with more power, better reliability (way better internals in the 2.5), and yet, virtually the same fuel economy.

Sounds like a successful purchase that lasted, Horseshoez. I always heard bad things online from Mazda and Ford but I never knew that there was some good out of it. Kinda reminds me of DSM.

Kind of funny, given how successful the Duratec 2.5 has been received by the Mazda3 community, I've been keeping half an eye peeled for a clean 2008-2009 Mazda3 s Grand Touring 5-Speed model with a trashed 2.3; the Ford engines are so incredibly plentiful you can buy one with low mileage (like under 50,000 miles) for $500 or less. The two motors are externally virtual clones with the exception of a few intake fittings and such (said another way, use the Mazda manifolds), many folks are doing the swap in a weekend, and then end up with a nice light weight car (about 2,900 pounds) with 175 hp and 175 torque.

Looking back, I misspoke, the car most commonly sporting the 2.5 is the Ford Fusion, not the Ford Focus.
