Custom Car Cover

Anyone who is in the unfortunate position of having only one garage and is thinking about buying a car cover - read on.

I was hesitant at first to lay down $400 for a car cover. I wasn't sure what the difference was between the cheap models and the more expensive ones.

After doing a lot of research and even more reading, I decided to go with the Covercraft "Weathershield HD"Custom car cover.

I live in New Jersey and we recently had 28 inches of snow dumped on us. That is when I saw the difference of cheap car covers and mine.

Mine stayed in place (using a bungi cord in the anchoring holes) with up to 50MPH gusts and 30MPH consitent blowing. Not only that, but because of the construction of the car cover, NO SNOW WAS CAPABLE OF STICKING TO IT. When I walked around the neighborhood, I saw car covers in yards, up against the sides of houses and against fences. The ones that actually stayed on the cars had at least 12-18 inches of snow on it.

The car cover paid for itself already and I'm ecstatic that I chose correctly. This car cover is great quality.

One thing that did surprise me though was that it didn't come with a storage sack. For that price I thought one was included but whatever. Can't beat the quality of this thing.

I also live in the northeast and I have a car cover but refuse to put it on during the winter. Im afraid the thing will freeze on the car itself and when you take it off will peel away the paint.

Nothing Yet

Some car covers will leave fine scratches but those are the cheapo models. Some car covers state that they have a "protective" coating underneath the cover but, what people don't realize is that protective coating, once wet with moisture, will freeze to the vehicle and it ain't fun trying to get it off. You have to use warm water to unfreeze it from the car. Not sure what could happen if you yank the cover off, maybe paint removal or wax and polish at least!

The car cover that I purchased has not created any fine scratches and is very unlikely to freeze to the car because it has a "teflon-like coating" built into the threads.

mine is a cheap car cover, it works just fine. it won't freeze onto the car at all, although it's not completely non-sticky to snow. When I got rid of big chunk of snow, I could still see a fine layer of icy snow on top of it. It doesn't seem to create any scratches on the paint. It costs only 40bucks......1/10 of the price....

As a user of car covers for many years, I can tell you that all car covers will put some scratches in the paint if the cover is subject to a lot of wind. Dust will trap under the cover and if the cover starts to flap in the wind you WILL get find scratches over time. What I do is get a professorial detail every year, which takes out most of the fine scratches. Some colors show the scratches more then others. NEVER buy the OEM covers or anything like them. You will only get about 2 years out of the cover if it is exposed to full sun. The chemical bonding of the cover starts to deteriorate over time and you will have lint dust all over your car, everytime you take if off. It pays to buy a very good cover such as Coverking StormProof Car Cover. This is similar to the OP cover. Since none of my cars are daily drivers, including my TL covering for me is better then not. NEVER put a cover on a dirty car. Thats like putting sandpaper over your car. California duster or equivalent is a must have to dusk the car off each time you put the cover on. This keeps the scratches down to a minimum
