CPO versus non CPO

I am looking to trade in my 2009 TSX for a 2010 TL tech package for 30,970. I found it at a Ford dealership. It was only owned by 1 person and appears to be in great condition. I was looking for CPO but since this is a 2011, I was thinking about buying this one. Good idea?

With the cpo, you get an extra year of the powertrain warranty, plus the vehicle is thoroughly inspected by the Acura dealer. Go with cpo!

If you can talk them down a little more, then get an extended warranty.

For that much money I'd try to find a CPO with a few more miles and get a SH-AWD model

I am a big fan of CPO over new. You benefit from someone else eating a huge portion of the car's depreciation, and you get a car the feels very new.

CPO with the AcuraCare warranty wrap is what I've done on the last 4 cars I bought (01TL, 04TL, 06RL, and 09TL). While it's too early to say on the 2009 TL that I got this year, I'm in the black on the AcuraCare warranty on each of the other three cars (meaning the covered repair costs exceeded the cost of the warranty purchase).

I'm sure other AZ members may have other priorities and prefer brand new over used. This is my 2 cents from a perspective of minimizing TCO on a fairly new car.

Stew4HD they just lowered the price from 30,985 to 30,000 and I can apply the equity from my TSX ($4,000) towards the TL. I can take it Acura and get them to check it out right?

Acura will not certify the vehicle for you. I dont even think you will be able to purchase the Acura care extended warranty if the vehicle was not purchased through an Acura dealer.

Call Acura and see what they will do for you. I am pretty sure that for a price, they will look the car over... but do call them to see. If not, you can still buy an extended warranty to cover any and all issues. How warranty is left on the car?

I actually went through this process in 2010 when I bought my 2009 TL, and my findings differed from diddy_nyc's. At the end of my vehicle search I narrowed it down to two cars: one that was at an Acura dealer, and one that was at a 3rd party dealer. To determine if it was possible to purchase AcuraCare on a Acura that was not purchased at an Acura dealer, I called Cathy, the Finance Manager at Tustin Acura (714-669-9900).

You'll want to confirm these details for yourself before buying your car, but my understanding is that an Acura purchased from a 3rd party dealer is only eligible for an AcuraCare extended warranty if the vehicle is still within the (4 year / 50k mile) period. The 4 year period is from the vehicle in-service date, which the dealer should be able to give you. I noticed a lot of cost variability from dealer to dealer for AcuraCare warranty, so if you go this route, I would call around to different Acura dealers to get their quote on what the AcuraCare warranty would cost for the specific VIN you are looking at.

On the flip side, for an Acura purchased from an Acura dealer, my understanding is that Acura can elect to certify it if it's not certified already. This is the easiest route, and in my experience, I found that most dealers were willing to discount the cost of the AcuraCare warranty more if I bought the car from that dealership than if I was buying the AcuraCare warranty for a car I bought 3rd party. Basically you can include the AcuraCare warranty cost in your negotiation of the vehicle cost.
